If you've never had the opportunity to visit this historic area, make sure to include either July 4th or Labor Day Weekend in your plans when you do.
West Point offers free concerts throughout the summer, held at Trophy Point. The most famous of these take place on the above dates. The West Point bands (there are several) perform for approximately 2 hours and usually have a surprise guest star with them. Music includes classical, jazz, broadway tunes, etc. The final tune is always the 1812 Overture, accompanied by live bursts from the cannons on site.
Folks from near and far gather on the beautiful lawn at this location which not only faces the amphitheater, but the beautiful mountains and Hudson River. People arrive early in the day to scope out their locations. Hundreds of blankets and lawn chairs dot the area, in preparation of the picnic to come. Most bring coolers full of summertime fare, but there is also a food tent available for those who wish to travel light. Others board boats of all sizes to listen to the concert from the water nearby.
The evening culminates with a wonderful fireworks display, one Walt Disney himself would be envious of. And best of all, the entire evening is FREE.
Just remember to bring your photo ID.
