According to a recent press release from the Department of Education, Hawaii's Class of 2007 students taking the SAT had higher scores in reading (by 2 points) and writing (by 1 point), but lower scores in mathematics (by 3 points), than last year.

National average scores for this year, as compared to last, were lower in reading, writing and math. Reading scores dropped one point, writing dropped three points, and math fell three points nationally.

When examined by type of school:
  • Hawaii's public school students declined in all three subject areas, but not as much in reading and writing as public school students nationally.
  • Hawaii students attending schools with a religious affiliation improved in math and reading. The national group attending religious schools had a drop in math and no change in reading. However, the writing scores for Hawaii's students attending religious school scores declined more than those of the national group of students in religious schools.
  • Hawaii's independent school students suffered a steep decline in math as well as drops in reading and writing. Nationally, independent school students fell in math, improved in reading, and declined in writing.
