Before today I had never heard of Joel Burns. Joel Burns is a Fort Worth City Councilman. I saw the video below after reading Stewart Penn's blog. In the past week Jason Crouch had spoken out about the same thing and in the same way as Joel Burns and he is to be commended as well.
BULLYING. I think somehow in someway it has touched every single one of us in one way or another over the years. During your school age years it is to "be expected" because that is what happens at school. You stand up for yourself, you deal with it and "it goes away."
That method of thinking is no longer acceptable, no longer safe and no longer the answer. The amount of suicides in the past month due to bullying is just disastrous. What used to be a kind of "problem" is quickly becoming a major crisis in this country. Right now it is at epidemic proportions. What is it going to take for this country to wake up and take a hard line of action against these bullies who just won't stop?
Is it more acceptable or harder to punish because they are pre-teens? Maybe that is the problem. No one can take it seriously because they are "children." Children or not people need to learn to respect each other and if this doesn't happen and something isn't done to change it, this problem is only going to get worse.
To Joel Burns and Jason Crouch who are reaching out and trying to help - I salute you!

Deb - Good for Mr. Burns for standing up for the victims of bullying. Why IS this being tolerated across this great country?

Debra, thanks for posting this and the link to Mr. Burns city council remarks. I do agree with you that bullying is running rampant in our schools. I know that first hand with spending so many years in the classroom and it seemed to get worse each passing year. Our school systems need to take this as the serious issue that it is and make the schools a safe and respectful environment for all its members: students, staff, and administration.
