Your real estate connection for Anne Arundel County, Maryland - Home of Fort George G. Meade, Northrop Grumman, BWI and the U.S. Naval Academy

When our now-grown children were in elementary and middle school, we bought seasons tickets to University of Maryland football games, hoping they would have so much fun they would want to go to UMD.  We knew that in-state tuition would make college more affordable for us and them some day, and they would be more likely to graduate without college loans by going there rather than an out-of-state college or university.

The results of our long-term efforts:  two out of three became Terps.  The third had an athletic scholarship to an out-of state school.  Our outings to Terps games provided hours of family time we all enjoyed for years... in fact, my husband and I still hold seasons tickets and continue going, even though our "kids" are grown and long-gone.

Now there is another way to expose your children to Maryland athletics, the Junior Terps Club.  As Junior Terps, they will receive:

  • terpsAn Official Junior Terps Membership Card.
  • An E-Birthday Card from Testudo.
  • Four issues of the Junior Terps Tales E-Newsletter each year.
  • Special giveways, including T-shirts (while supplies last), at special Junior Terps Club Events for each of the following sports: Field Hockey, Volleyball, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Women's Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Men's Lacrosse, and Women's Lacrosse.
  • Free tickets to designated home games for men and women's soccer, men and women's lacrosse home game, a baseball home game, a women's basketball home game

I think it's worth checking out if you prefer the idea of in-state over out-of-state or private university tuition.  For more information you can just email jrterps@umd.edu or call 301-314-7162.  It's FREE, so why not?

Florida encourages in state college through something called "Bright Futures". Your GPA along with community service hours and some other things can qualify you for a free ride. My daughter is now a Junior and has set her sights on going to UF School of Journalism. Luckily for me this is supposed to be the best journalism school in the country and also she was one of just 80 kids across the country to be selected to attend the UF Journalism Summer symposium this year so things are looking good.

Congrats on your kids!!

Florida also has prepaid tuition which can actually be transfered within the family

Also, many alumni memberships offer a legacy plan to get a large discount for out of state students whose parents are alumni club members

Margaret, great information! In-state schools make so much more sense financially, unless your child does get a scholarship. Congratulations on your strategy and support of your children to attend college. I think it's neat that you still go to the games. College sports are so much fun to attend, whether your kids go to the school or not!

Margaret:  It appears we have something else in common.  The University of Maryland Athletics.  I am very much a fan of Brenda Frese and the Lady Terps Basketball Team.  They were so exciting to watch last year.  In fact, I have been waiting and waiting for basketball season to start.  Go Terrapins !   Karen Anne

Margaret: This is a great program for grooming children for an in state education. More schools should adopt such policies.

Paula, I suspect when the Athletic Dept was tryng to groom future sports boosters, but that's okay.  I would use it to encourage my kids to get involved with (and want to attend) UMD

Karen, How did someone in Texas become a Terps fan?

Bridget - Yes, and we're lucky.  There are about 10 State institutions, so in-state tuition is not limited to UMD

Davd, We have something like that, too, but I don't know the details because it came along after our children finished college.  I agree that today's parents should take advantage of that, too.

Simon, One of my sons went to college in Florida (Florida Southern, Lakeland), and he told us about that.  Sounds like a smart way for the state to keep good talent home.

Margaret - young minds are just like a sponge and will absorb almost anything good job on providing meaningful material to be absorbed and the right environment. We all are a product of our environment and creating the right environment is a parents responsibility if we leave it to others who knows where they will end up.
