The power of vision and will

tas_nan_westfall_flickrSo it’s a tough market, right?  You and your Realtor® friends get together and commiserate.  You feel good in this group knowing it is bad for everyone.  In this thinking of no one is doing anything, so it is ok for me to not be doing anything.  WRONG!  With this type of thinking, just take off your pin, turn in your jacket and get another job.  You are right, you can’t do anything and this will create a do nothing action plan and that will create another dark hole in the industry.

The fact is houses are being sold.  The new housing start numbers released yesterday showed an uptick.  I know of one agent here in MA who has already sold sixty eight million dollars of real estate this year to date.  So what is your problem?  Houses are selling, why aren’t you?

I know the answer to this question and it is all in your mind and in your heart.  You want it to be easy, like it was back in the days when you didn’t have to work.  You want it to be like old times when you had a great relationship with a person in a bank and they gave you REO’s to sell. You want your phone to ring like the old days, but you don’t pick it up when it rings.  In all these cases you are living your life without any will and no vision.

Real Estate has changed, forever.  If you are not using internet tools, turn in your name pin–you will be gone in a few years anyway.  Consumers have access to listings.  Consumers have access to information that the Realtor® once owned. So now what?  Simply the only answer for any professional is to be Professional.  Understand the information we have available, develop ideas and scenarios on how to stage, market and sell a home.  Find people in your industry who are doing well and ask them what they are doing?  I guarantee you they are not sitting around with other agents hoping for a return to the good old days.  THE GOOD OLD DAYS ARE GONE FOREVER. Deal with it.

tas_imrealestateagent_dot_comThe good news is that there isn’t a better time to come into this industry with new a fresh ideas.  Those of you here blogging and using the social media tools are beginning to understand that fact.  Those of you who blog with a purpose and a point of view are reaping benefits.  Those of you who think having 5000 Facebook friends is somehow going to be a benefit to you in your real estate career are not even fooling themselves if they look at their results.

I have an idea, today, why not think about your industry and how you can be a professional who is an asset to your community.  It is not about you, ever.  It is about what you do and think and give to the people you serve.  Break out of the way you are thinking and working and actually accomplish something today.

We have to keep getting better at what we do and understanding the new tools, then using them.  Its also about staying in touch with past customers and having business alliances!  Definately a challenge, but learning and growing is fun so I am up for it.

Well written Larry. The market we have is the market we have. Do business in the current market environment, or time to move on. It really is that simple.

I like this post too.  I have been in the business for years (30+!!!) and have seen slow times, slower times, good times, great times.....HOWEVER, during all these times there are agents who have not done well and have complained about the "times".

I think there is always business out there if we will "listen" to the market, change and grow and be willing to check out new opportunities.

Doing the same thing won't work!  Waiting for the market to come back won't work because we would starve.  Changing and growing will work!  There is business out there for those willing to step out side the old box.

Well done.   I like the push on a Wednesday morning, and agree the same old will never work.   I know there is so much room to grow on the internet - just find a way and do it!

Thank you all, I am buoyed by your responses.  I am in the process of choosing a new office for myself and I have observed all of this behavior in the last couple of months.  I am truly excited about this time right now. There is such opportunity.  I just wanted to get that word out there.  I know that agents I worked with who have these negative behavior patterns won't even be reading, but my hope is that a couple of people in the fence will get what I have gotten. Belief, faith and the actions that deliver results.  It is another great day of possiblility.

@Bill, I use Flickr for the pictures I don't personally own. This is a shot from an agent somewhere in the midwest.  If you click on the picture it will take you to her Flickr page.  You may know that Flickr will allow the sharing of pictures if you link back to the page from which you got the image.
