Ok bloggers what is your opinion on the expansion of the Wal-mart stores? Right now our town has the regular Wal-Mart. Which in my eyes is fine the way it is. They want to turn it into the Super Store and add produce and a lot more food etc... Right in the same shopping center is Safeway and above that is Save Mart and a few miles away is the new PriceCo store. Not to mention the small grocery stores in other surrounding areas in this small Tuolumne County. These stores will suffer, cause you know once your in Wal-mart you won't be able to help yourself and go pick up food items as well. I know I will probably do it. I don't want it and we don't need it in this small community in Tuolumne County. I am hoping it gets vetoooood.
Just say No! You are correct. This expansion will mean the death of the other stores, so while it may be a temporary gain in extra jobs, the loss of the other stores will cause a net loss of jobs.
This happened in a small town where I started my RE career. The Walmart came and in literally drove the small mom and pop stores out of business within 6 months. Like Kristen says "JUST SAY NO"
Thanks girls for your thoughts and comments. I wish the rest of this town would "Just say No" but there are alot of people in favor of this. Maybe it will get caught up in the red tape for years to come. One can only hope.
On the flip side - for the consumer, they will be able to buy groceries at sometimes 1/3 to 1/2 off of other stores -- same items ---- savings is amazing -- there is the good and the bad --
Update on the Wal-mart expansion. Front page of our news paper said Wal-mart gets the green light. On Monday the Sonora City Council approved it unanimously. Bummer for the city of Sonora, California in my opinion.
I like one stop shopping so I am for the Super Wal Mart. I will still be shopping at the smaller grocery stores because they carry the best meats. I will continue to go to the local Farmers Market because they have the freshest fruits and vegetables.
It will cause some lost jobs but it will also create new jobs. It is a tough decision in this tough economy.
