The Conversation IS the Relationship

Day one of Fierce Conversations in Austin, Texas. Kudos to KW for hosting a great training.

For those of you who don't know, Fierce Conversations written by Susan Scott is one of the most powerful books you will read on how to have meaningful conversations in our business and personal lives.

No more "How's it going" or "How's the weather" conversations for me.

An A'Ha or Apostrophe (the 12 year olds equivalent to the Epiphany!), was that the Conversation is the Relationship.

How many relationships do you have where the conversation is always the same? Where you know that when you talk to so and so, that the conversation will always be superficial, full of fluff, or obligatory.  What if we had conversations that instead of starting with "how are you" started with, "so what is going on in your life that is interesting"? What a concept.

In the busy-ness of life, we tend to take shortcuts, and "how are you" is one of them. Do we really seem like we care when we ask that? I am done with the "how are you's" and moving towards, "tell me something interesting". I look forward to the responses and the reactions.

I'll keep you posted.

Robyne--

I LOVE "so what's going on in your life that is interesting". I'll have to try that.

I also wanted to add something about the art of listening, which is clearly an important part of the conversation. I published a book last year on leadership for young people, and one of the chapters is about listening and asking intelligent questions to spur a conversation. For example....

Questions that ask who, what, where, and when are designed to gain very simple factual information. If you want the conversation to go a little deeper, try asking how and why questions. Those are the types of questions that can help you figure out what another person is really thinking. The better we are at getting to know someone, the more opportunity we have to help them out.

Thanks for posting!

Robyne, I've been meaning to read that book. I am intrigued by it and wish I could afford and had time to take every KW class.  They really rock!
