Des Moines' Greenwood Neighborhood Dresses for fall

This is a time of year when yards across the nation give rise to ghosts, goblins, witches, demons and and other assorted ghouls. It's also a popular time of year to set out fall mums and make colorful displays of pumpkins, squash, hay bales and cornstalks and you can find all the above in the Green Historic Neighborhood this year.

The display on the right can be enjoyed on the corner of Lincoln Place Dr. and St. John's Rd. The pumpkins and hay bale are just past 37th and St. John's.

The Greenwood Historic Neighborhood is located in central Des Moines and is bordered by Grand Ave on the north, 31st St. on the east, 37th on the west and Lincoln Place Drive to the south. The area is not home to any businesses per se, but it does include Des Moines University, Greenwood Elementary, PEO and Wesley Acres, a large retirement community.

The hilly topography is very scenic and rather than being a grid, roads wind and meander this way and that, making Greenwood a popular place for bikers, joggers, walkers and runners. Just this past weekend the area hosted a leg of the Des Moines Marathon yet again. The rolling hills of the area were formed by the alluvial action of the Raccoon River of which Greenwood forms part of the northern ridgeline of the river's channel. The homes in the area are as unique and varied as the terrain, with many being older two and three story homes, built from the early 1900's to the 1940's, and most of those being one of a kind gems that make the area also a popular place for a leisurely drive. left: looking south down Lincoln Place Dr.

In the fall the neighborhood puts on a grand show. Most homes have displays of pumpkins and squash and many put on special spooky displays in advance of All Hallows Eve.

Nice pics Matt. I see this all over Coralville too. A couple of homeowners really go the whole nine yards with true spectacles of ghouls and ghosts.
