I just had to reblog this post from Alan May.  Never thought a non-working key would ever make me smile, but Alan's use for old listing keys is bound to bring an ear to ear grin to your face.

We've all been in that situation.  Open your desk drawer only to be assaulted by the loud jingling of useless keys rolling around.  How did I get so many keys?  Throw them in a drawer, and just like wire hangers in an unused closet, they seem to multiply on their own.

Where have all those keys come from?  Well, they might have been sitting in the lockbox of that house that closed last February.  You found some of those in your blazer that you wore to the last Open House.  One set was sitting in the coin tray of the car.

Somehow many of these extra keys never found their way into the hands of the new owners, and assuredly, the new owners have since changed the locks on the house (if they're smart), and these keys are homeless.

So...what do we do with them?  Somehow, I just can't manage to throw them in the trash, after all, they were once glorious entries to portals of beautiful homes.

Fortunately, I have a built-in outlet.  Mrs. Elvis is a pre-school teacher, and when my drawer fills to overfilling with used keys, I put them on a large chain, and give them to her.

She then puts them in her classroom, where they have a new life as keys for invisible castles, pretend race cars and little tiny dreams.  We do the same with old cell phones (after removing the batteries).

Fun.  Recycled keys.
