Our Lady of Refuge School, fondly known as OLR among the students, has been an important part of the Los Altos community for over 60 years.

I was lucky enough to attend the school's weekly Peace Builders Assembly, which started off with everyone singing loudly and clearly our Star Spangled Banner. It was odd not to have the clapping for a sports team at the conclusion, but that made it even more special!

The school has a fully equiped media center run by Toni Napier who explained her theory of tying standard classroom work into the use of the computer. Children graduating from OLR are exempt from high school computer classes due their proficiency. Also, Dr. Joan Bravo OLR's principal, is rightfully proud of the fully equiped science laboratory available to the junior high students and a music program that also accepts outside students for their after school instruction.

Father Raymond sets a wonderful example and follows in the footsteps of Monsignour Tom and Father Bill, who are ofter seen reading and providing additional instruction in the classrooms.

I think 4th grade teacher Mrs. Falcone hit the nail on the head when she spoke about the hugs that are readily available to get you through your day at OLR. I walked away from my visit that day feeling somehow "at peace" knowing that a tradition of excellent schooling is located in Los Altos.
