Today I was very fortunate to spend an hour on an online conference call with Richard Mendenhall, National Association of Realtors 2001 President. I can honestly say, it was one of the best calls I have been on in a while. Richard is a very inspirational and motivational man, but yet very honest and forth right about the roles of leadership.
One of the the things that Richard said today that really stuck with me was "No matter how big the footsteps that you follow, always blaze your own trail."
I have found myself in the past always looking at those that have gone before me on achieving some of the same goals in life that I hope to achieve, and at times when I look at them I tend to doubt myself.
Why do I have this doubt? Perhaps it is because even though some of the people that I look up to hold my same values in life, some of them do not. Some of the people that I look up to and respect for what they have achieved, tend to disagree with me strongly. So my doubt comes from thinking that maybe the values that they hold are better at reaching the sought after destination than those that I hold. But in the end, I always have to stay true to what I am passionate about and my beliefs.
Today, I had a break through with those last five words... always blaze your own trail! It is not about what someone else has done, and it is not about those footsteps you think you have to fill. It is all about making your own path and finding the destination on your own map. So what if you have to take the back roads instead of the interstate...you might just find that that back roads in life are alot more beautiful than the interstate!
So I challenge everyone to "always blaze your own trail"- it is what you were created to do!
