TreesWhen planning to build or to Landscape an existing house, too little attention is paid to the Energy Saving aspects of Landscaping.

If building...Solar Orientation of the house should be a primary consideration. Taking advantage of exposure to the sun can save $$$$. Studies have shown that careful positioning of homes and thoughtful planting of trees and shrubas can save up to 25% of cooling energy. Summer daytime temperatures are 3-6 degrees cooler in tree shaded neighborhoods.

  The considerations should be of:

Shade Trees- Because the sun is so high in the Summer...deciduous trees should be planted on the East and West sides of the house to keep the house shaded

Wind Breaks-a well planted windbreak can help cut down on cold air infiltration into the house in Winter saving on energy heating bills

Foundation Plantings-Deciduous shrubs can shade windows and walls and also reduce noise! If artfully planted they can also help to extend the life of air conditioner compressors by keeping them cooler.graph

When planning you new home or when re-landscaping your existing one....a graph may be a practical idea! just like moving furniture....it's a lot easier on paper!

Finally, seek advice from your local Garden Center. Choose plants that are indigeneous to your area. Choose plants that use less water and resist pests....and ones that provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Not sure I would put all those links into a single post.  Possibly I might put them up on your own site and link to that page from here.

    I loved this blog, Joan...

especially the parts about shade trees and indigenous plants...

I'm fortunate in that I have a giant sugar maple and a very large japanese maple in front of my very large west facing windows....it's like living in a tree house all summer and then in the winter, the sun shines in and reduces my heating costs !

    I'm in love with trees....

This is interesting!  I bet when people planted these trees around my place 20 years ago they were thinking about shade...they're all shading the buildings!

Hi Jo..I'm a tree person too....except for the dreaded oaks! What a pain in the Fall. They(the leaves) wait and fall after everything else is raked!

Sally....sometimes I think people are guilty of"overkill"on planting. Everything looks so sparse at the beginning..till it grows!

Joan, as a "landscaper" that tends to buy on impulse, this is a great post.  Planning location as much as the look is so important- thanks for the tips!

Solar orientation is especially important in colder climates.   We spent most of the weekend working on landscaping -- good to have a refresher on the energy aspects.

    Hi Joan,

    This is so true!!!

Great post and a great topic to cover. It is important that buyers consider this. Also the more buyers are aware of this the greater the appreciation of homes that are actually positioned to take advantage of the sun -

Joan, I'm going to be getting a nice fat Grapefruit Tree to shade one of our kitchen windows, but never thought about shading the A/C! That puppy got really warm last month when the temps went up (Aug was the hottest on record). Thanks!

Hi Laurie..you sure are a jack of many trades! I must say, when we were planting around my house we were thinking more looks than function...I think todays Buyers are more Function oriented!

We are slowly replanting our wind break after losing most of it in our 2001 tornado, along with our shade trees, etc.  Trees grow so slowly it is so sad to lose even one.  But now I am putting in colors and shapes that I like and Yes, I am staging my yard - all 80 acres of it.
