Ever wonder what effect all of the white noise we humans are creating has on the other creatures of this planet??? Most of us don't think of such things, but during a conversation with a friend of mine this morning white noise became the topic of discussion.

You see, Geri (my friend) was at home reading yesterday, with the sliders to the porch open and the power went out. Suddenly she heard this chorus of the most beautiful birds singing in the little forest patch behind her house. Birds she does not normally hear! She said it was the most beautiful surprise! This lasted about a half hour. Then the power came on and suddenly only the larger birds, that she normally hears, continued.

It was NOT because of an air conditioner being on, she only had a ceiling fan on!!! It was as if the white noise, which we humans cannot hear, was disruptive enough to have a negative effect on the smaller birds and kept them from singing.

It is amazing, how we are changing our planet. Things we don't even think about, like white noise and how it effects smaller species! It is discomforting to realize what we are doing!

That's an eye opener. I am sitting here listening to the waterfall of the pool. TV is off, no fans, just quiet and water flowing. Very peaceful!

Wow!!  I've never really thought about it.  I know I enjoy the QUIET when I'm home working and then...  MY TRIBE OF CHILDREN come home from school and the quiet is over.  I think this is why I love the Fall/Winter here in FL because we open everything up and enjoy the beautiful fresh air and nature!!

Brandon - While the kids may make noise, it is nothing compared to the effect white noise has on the smaller creatures. I don't know if you were around during the 50's and 60's when communities would run the air raid sirens for tests, but if you were, imagine those things running 24/7!!! It would drive anyone nuts!!! Good reason for the birds to stop singing!!!

I never thought about white noise.  It is rare to have true quiet.  I love to hear some beautiful song birds but I live on a creek and when I open the door, all I hear are the cicadas.

We are ever evolving and you can make your own noise.

Hi Bill and Barbara Jo, I was thinking about this not too long ago.  Down here we have a lot of summer storms and it is not uncommon to lose electricity for a while.  When it does go out, I can not believe how quiet it is.  I can hear the carbonation in a soda can!  I think it will be years..many, many years before we know exactly what all we have damaged including ourselves with Electric, Cable, Phone Lines, Cell Towers, Radio Towers, Microwaves, you name it.

Speaking of Microwaves...How safe are they REALLY?  I wonder..if they can nuke food so fast, what are they doing to us?  Thanks for a Deep thinking post.  :)

Stephanie - There are a lot of web sites with more information on white noise and some of it really does scare you! I agree, you have to wonder what the whole story is...you know big industry is not going to tell you all of the facts...kind of like the TV commercials for drugs, when at the end they talk 90 miles per hour and tell you all of the side-effects the drugs can have. We don't even get that much of a disclaimer with things like microwaves and cell phones!

The Industrial Revolution......what has it brought us and when do we know enough to say just that "ENOUGH!" ???

This is interesting, I've never considered this or heard of it and it really makes me sad. I love our wildlife and hate that we are ruining it :(

Lysa- It is sad, but true. Do a little internet research. If you sit still and listen, you will hear the hum of all kinds of electrical equipment in your home. We just ignore it, but the wild creatures hear it too and many of them have hearing much better than ours!!! Think what your poor dog or cat must be going through each day.....

Bill & Barbara Jo - Interesting to think about it. I think you are correct that we get so comfortable with the noise our own home makes. I never thought to put it in this perspective. My poor animals!

Mary - Imagine a world without those man-made sounds, where we could really be in tune with nature.... maybe I am just a dreamer, but it sure would be Utopian to have the conveniences and not the harmful effects! Maybe alternative energy will one day get us there together with advances in technology as to how our machines run....

My refrigerator just kicked in....OMG!!! It is SO loud!!!

That is an eye-opener type of experience. But it does make sense as we humans push further into the lives of other species living around us. Our activities disrupt their lives and they react to it.

Bill & Barbara Jo, everyday I mourn the loss of the beautiful sounds of wild life.  I mourn the loss of species that have disappeared, and I mourn the loss of beauty on this planet.  We have a chance to turn it around, but doesn't seem many people are interested does it?

Esko - And it is sad that we can have such a negative effect on them!!!

Terry - I mourn with you! When I look at my circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances it is sad how few REALLY care about these things - they want the newest, shiniest, fastest, most expensive of everything, regardless of the cost to the planet and species residing there -

Bill & Barbara Jo, thats the hardest part.  Maintaining friendships and relationships with people who are too self absorbed to see what is happening.  Well they will be caring sooner than later won't they?

Oh yeah, when they finally realize this heat and the weather are here to stay, when they see their ocean front properties become a little too close to the ocean, they'll care.  They just probably won't do anything because by then it will be too late.

Nice post Bill & Barbara Joe. I didn't catch all of it because the TV was on.... Makes you think about the need to focus; especially on the important things.
