Pay It Forward: Can You Spare A Pint of The Fine Red??

Fooled you, this ISN'T about wine, it's about something FAR more valuable than any vintage wine, it's a real life saving liquid, the most precious on earth!!  Blood, we've ALL got to have it!Blood donor sticker

For those of you that have been following us for some time, you know that I am a regular blood donor.  It's been a lifelong habit since I was a senior in high school in a time long ago and a land far away :)  30 years of giving a little back.

Yesterday was time to drop off another pint at the local blood donation center, Hoxworth Blood Center.  Click HERE for their official website.  They've got branches all over the Cincinnati area, and have just recently moved their Blue Ash facility from Hunt Road to Kenwood Road (just across from Qdoba's north of downtown Blue Ash....a few short blocks north of Kenwood/Cooper Rd intersection).

It's a gleaming new facility, set up to take care of you!  A nice waiting area, separate screening rooms, and honestly, I wouldn't mind having one of those lounge chairs they have!  VERY comfortable!  A clean stick, and within 10 minutes the bag was filled up!

They have a nice refreshment area set up with popcorn, juices and sodas, cookies, etc.  And best of all yesterday a volunteer named Jim.  I'm normally a donate, slam down a juice bottle and get on my way kind of guy...things to do you know!!  But yesterday, I stayed an hour.  Jim was a Korean War army vet and a great gentleman to talk to!  With both of us former military, he had questions for me about my Annapolis and Navy time, I had questions for him about his Army time.  Before we knew it, we'd already went past the end of his volunteer shift!  Hopefully Jim is there the next time I go in!

So if you can spare a pint of the fine red, make sure to contact Hoxworth or your preferred local facility to donate the gift of life.  There are always people in need, and that is NOT going to change, so please consider helping out in any way you can!

"I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition.  I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can.  No more, no less."  Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®

Take care

Roger, Many can't, but you've already demonstrated you give back to your community in many touching ways!  To each their own way!

Harry, You've probably saved many lives over the years.  Hoxworth lately sends letters telling you what area hospital it was used at, and sometimes that it went for someone undergoing chemo or something along those lines.  Obviously nothing that violates privacy of the patient.

Thanks for the reminder Bliz,

My brother is in the 100 gallon club.  Of course he is MUCH older than me so has been giving a lot longer. This was a timely reminder for me as sibling rivalry is alive and well. LOL

I will also suggest to the local guys here the marketing aspect of letting the doner know how the blood was used.  This is an excellent idea.

Must go buy fish stuff,  I have a listing to cancel.  (Loved that post.)

Roger, And that's more than most by far!

Hercel, That's some serious blood donation!  Kudos to your brother and you!

Don't forget the dowel so you can push the paste DEEP into the curtain rod, it shouldn't be visible! :)

Hi Bliz, it doesn't hurt at all and you get a cookie and some juice and the end of your giving....how cool is that?

Cynthia, These folks are pros!  First stick hits the vein every time, and mine can be a bit challenging to find sometimes!  And cookies and juice to boot, and for those that imbibe...I've heard you get your swerve on a lot faster when you're down a pint...but that's just something I've heard, since I don't actually drink!

This is a great reminder and I use to do it often, fainted every single time.  No longer allowed, maybe the fainting there was a sign.

Don't forget to donate platelets too!  Many immuno-suppressed  leukemia patients are in desperate need of platelets after transplants.

I am scheduled to go on Monday … I’ve been a blood donor for 36 years. It’s such a good feeling.

Liz, Could be!

Dave, Our local center can do platelets, double reds, whatever anyone can do!

Kathleen, It is, and from what I understand good for the donor's health too!  Freshens everything up!

Chris, I certainly try to be!

I've never given blood.. have a phobia about it.

Maybe I should re-consider...

You're doing something that benefits others to the max.

Judi, I can't say I'm a huge fan of having a needle in my arm, but just look away when they first stick it, and no problem.  If you don't like the sight of blood in the tubing, just look away, read a magazine, etc.  The last visit, reading AR blogs on my Crackberry while I was hooked up! :)

What a wonderful way to give back - it reminds me of the last time I tried to give blood... they turned me away because I had children at home with the flu during last year's epidemic (it hit my area hard right around Halloween last year).   I ended up with it myself the next day.   Thanks for the reminder to try again!

Karen, Looks like they timed their "no" just right!  Hopefully the flu bug stays away this year!

Dawn, My day job takes the blood drives pretty seriously.  We're typically one of the top Johnson & Johnson companies for participation.  I missed the last drive while in Buffalo on business, so it was time to get caught up! I haven't really checked into the bone marrow donation process yet.

BLiz I can definitely spare a pint of the fine red.  I used to donate regularly and I don't even remember when I got out of the habit. It's the very least that I can do.  Thank you.

I used to give every 56 days, beginning as a senior in high school. I got my ten-gallon T-shirt from Red Cross in the early 1980s. Then I developed high blood pressure and couldn’t give anymore. Now I’d like to give (no longer have high blood pressure), but all the of the organizations have an old, outdated, discriminatory policy against gays giving blood. I still try occasionally, such as when the Chargers and the Padres have blood drives, but still keep getting turned down.

Russel, I think those questions are FDA controlled if I understand correctly.  I had a stretch of a number of years I was on their could not give list because I'd flagged for one of the liver enzyme tests.  Eventually they changed the rules and allowed for a retest and I've been giving again for the last 9 years.  I've totally lost track of how much given...gave in high school, while at Annapolis, during my Navy time of 6 years, then after I got out.
