Southwest Airlines - A great win for Greenville South Carolina and The Upstat

I wrote a post a while ago about the impact of Southwest Airlines on Greenville SC Economy and Real Estate. Well on October 20th, Southwest Airline (SWA) officials announced that they will begin service at Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) on March 13th 2011. They will offer seven day non-stop round trip service to five cities Southwest_Airlines_Planebetween $59 and $99 one-way. This means that one can travel from GSP to Nashville for $59, to Baltimore/Washington for$79, to Orlando for $79, to Chicago Midway for $99, and to Houston for $99. Plus of course bags fly free.

According to Bill Owen SWA's lead planner in the schedule department, "SWA will have two daily round trip flights to Baltimore/Washington, one to Nashville, one to Orlando, two to Chicago Midway and one to Houston. In addition, they will also offer service between GSP and 68 other SWA airports", plus they will start service in Charleston as well. Regarding our area, Bill said "If you're going to South Carolina, it's got a GREAT business environment. The scenery is amazing, from the beaches of the low country to the Piedmont hill Upstate. The food is unique and fantastic. Famous Carolina barbeque and low county seafood will keep you coming back for more". Obviously Bill appreciates good food, and SWA should help make the business environment of the Upstate stronger.

Ben Haskew of Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce is predicting that SWA will save the Upstate area about $80 million a year, that they will offer better service and lower fares, and entice more economic development prospects.

Southwest Airline carriers are full sized Boeing jets. They are known for their low fares, great value and great service - and bags fly free.

According to WSPA.com, "officials say 35-40 jobs will be created to serve GSP" Of course there is the potential for more jobs that will be created by the companies that will call Greenville SC and The Upstate area home in the future. Plus the impact this will have on Greenville area real estate. This should be a great win for The Upstate.
