Pay-it-Forward - The Gift of Life
I wanted to do something really special to “pay-it-forward” today (October 25, 2010) because today is the day I was born. I am so grateful for my life. I am truly blessed. I am grateful for all of my life experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly.
I’m blessed with good health. I’ve never needed to receive blood. I had the Big C 10 years ago and I am one of the lucky ones. I am so truly blessed to have given life to my son. I believe there is no greater gift than becoming a parent. Nothing feels better than knowing a small gesture of donating blood may actually save a life. Today, on my birthday, I wanted to pay-it-forward in a relevant and meaningful way.
A few statistical facts:
- 350 donors per day are needed to support 31 hospitals in Northern California.
- 60% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood.
- 4.8% actually do give blood (this is astonishing)
- 75% of the U.S. population will need blood at some time in their life.
I know the blood I donated to the American Red Cross for over 30 plus years has saved lives. I learned today that at some point in the past my blood was given to a baby. I asked the nurse who was processing me (paperwork) how she knew that. She pointed to a code on the computer screen and said “This code means your blood was tested and given to a baby.”
That created an overwhelming surge of even deeper gratitude within me. In that moment … the nurse had given me a gift. In that moment I truly realized just how powerful and meaningful one small gesture can be.
If you have never given blood and are eligible to give, then consider paying-it-forward with the Gift of Life by making a blood donation.
