Why Being A Weirdo Is A Good Thing

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Standing OutIf you ever felt a little out of place with others around you welcome to the club. There is a funny expression, "You are unique, just like everyone else."

When you grew up in your teenage years, your Mom would admonish you to "Behave YOURSELF!" Well other than learning right from wrong when you are fully grown you have to figure out finally what behave means to you. Maybe you thought despite your devious ways as a teenager, you WERE behaving yourself.

Being eccentric or WEIRD in good ways helps us overcome the hum drum of normal. In real estate it lets us get paid in our desired specialty niches for "being ourself", creating an unfair advantage with our strengths, having FUN in our work.

I love the weird. I love the eccentric in any of us I find, including myself. I think different is good as long as it makes the world a better place. Edison as a boy sat on chicken's eggs to help them hatch. His curiosity and persistence later in life brought us many inventions including a filament in a light bulb that would not burn out too soon. The Wright brothers had this crazy idea that man could fly like the birds. Madame Curie liked to play with things that glowed in the dark. Wild and crazy Werner Von Braun had this dream of going to the moon of all places with rockets.

Being "normal" is a real stifler in your life and stops your creativity, your individuality, and your greatness to reach your true potential. They say in marketing ourselves to others we have to find our genius, our unique selling propostion, and the target audience that wants what we have. We are not everything. Who we target is not everyone. It is the MATCH of what we are good at, like building an airplane, for people who want to fly over the trees is where we have the match.

In real estate it is listening and watching ourselves to see where we have interest and FUN, and also monitoring what we are good at. Then finding the IDEAL CLIENTS that want that!! In all other career aspirations and our personal life, fathoming and divining our "gifts" - organizing, entertaining, leading, analyzing, nurturing, hospitality, solving... many gifts and taking those "talents" where they are needed.

Embrace your gifts that enrich lives, allow yourself to express your passions, EVEN IF they drive others crazy. Don't be a people pleaser with your "weirdness." It will drive you insane doing that. Whether it is your devotion to your work, politics, spirituality, charitable causes, hobbies, education of you, teaching of others, entertainment of others with music, dance, acting, or whatever, I say go for it!

To achieve the utlimate in life with WHO you are, value your weirdness, cherish it, immerse yourself in who you are, and see where it leads, what doors will open for you. Respect others uniquenesses as well. And don't feel bad if you are misunderstood often. It comes with the territory. Visionaries are often misunderstood. WHY? They are going where others have not been before.

Afterall, remember weirdo Werner Von Braun? We now have footprints on the moon.

What a great reminder to stay true to ourselves & never try to please EVERYBODY. Each one of us is truly unique & that's make us special. Not everyone likes our style... let's only work with the people who do & pass on the others!

Gary -  Those who are anything but normal are the ones who bring out the best (and probably worst) in me.  I'd like to say I can do the same thing for others. Fun and free spirited people should not be stifled.

If it weren't for the weird people, we'd all be really boring!  It's the differences in each of us that makes the world a fun, exciting place.

Lou Farris, MBA Denver, Colorado Metro Real EstateWeird? Naw... That is just plain old Texan independence. One of the things I learned, growing up in Dallas, was that you are who you are, and people won't respect someone who tries to be someone thy aren't. Now that I live in Colorado, I have carried the values I was raised with, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Im a fairly laid back guy, until the issues of right and wrong enter the picture. I don't redefine the word "is," as a former President did before the nation. Principles are easy to cow to but hard to live by, because of the effort it takes to maintain them. When i read the Realtor® pledge every day, for instance, I remind myself to basically live that part of my life diligently in the pursuit of service for others.

Weird... sure. This day and age to many are too busy taking what they can get, as fast as they can. They value profit over purity, and sacrifice their souls. It is a little weird to fight the good fight, and call a spade a spade, as my dad would say.

If purple is the new black, or fright is the new black (I think?), then normal has become the new weird. It is normal to strive, to work diligently, and to do good. That is the new weird. People will spectate and cheer while a group gangs up on one person and beat that person to death. We continue to glorify those who commit crime (Ray Lewis, Michael Vick, Todd Bertuzzi, and Bill Clinton, etc,), but we don't pat the ordinary person who chose to do something good on the back.

I am quite comfortable being who I am. I am weird because I seek to provide the best of myself out there. It is something that makes my waking up exciting and my going to sleep peaceful. Then, again, I do dress funny.

I know the feeling.  I have never fit in.  It was suggested to me that I was out of wack because of the death of my mother at a young age.  Another suggested I had mild aspergers.  My son has been diagnosed with a Sensory Processing Disorder.  I suspect that is my issue and people just assumed my problems as a kid where all related to the loss of my mother.  Knowing what the issue is helps a lot.

I sometimes envy my 4-year old nephew who is still at that age where he is oblivious to what others think and simply doesn't care how "weird" his thoughts and actions may be. I continue to be in awe of his ever growing imagination and entertaining perspective.

This must have hit a spot on a large number of Acxtive Rainers, as there are many, many comments.  I really liked the post and am very happy, and weird, that you wrote it.

So maybe it's not that we feel weird or different.  It's that we do not embrace the weirdness and let others form our own values.

Being weird AKA Standing out. Something most people are afraid of. I think many realtors stand out. That's why we work for ourselves.
