Dealing With the Low Down Realtor Blues.

By
Real Estate Agent with Lake and Lodge Realty LLC

Sometimes I think our career choice should be in a few more country songs along with cheatin spouses and ran away dogs. When our roller coaster is on the up, usually right after a huge commission check, we are in heaven but when we have worked two months on a deal that went south and we aren't quite sure how to pay the light bill we get those blues. The low down Realtor blues. You would think given the number of times we have been through it we would have saved for such an occasion but which deals are about to explode aren't always clear. So if you find yourself on the lowest part of our roller coaster career choice here are a few tips to help get you through.

Roller Coaster

  • Try spending your down time being constructive. When you keep busy it doesn't seem as bad.
  • Surround your self with positive players. Nothing keeps you down like being surrounded by negativity.
  • Keep working. Force yourself to keep taking steps towards your goal even in the slow times.
  • If you really want to pick up your spirits help someone else. Nothing feels better than knowing you helped someone less fortunate. There are tons of ways to help and most just require time. I have found volunteering not only makes you feel good but helps your public image.
  • I like to spend my downtime learning more about my field. The more I know the less chance of the same thing happening again.
  • Try a hobby but don't put so much time into it you lose track of your money maker. Hobbies are for spare time and less spare time is most Realtors goal.

Accepting our career choice is not a paid every week job helps too. Find a way to either set up a line of credit or save enough to cover the short times we have without pay and just keep doing what you do. Things always have a way of working out and most often leaves us wondering why we let it get to us but know you are not alone, we all go through it. Reading the Active Rain posts always picks me up. Every day there is an opportunity to learn and laugh. Best of luck in all you do and thanks for reading.

I like this! You make some excellent suggestions on how to survive the roller coaster ride. I actually was just planning a similar post when I saw yours. Believe that you have captured it better than I was going to.

Thanks!

Randy, you really made some excellent points... Real estate is a cyclical business and we must learn early on how to ride the tide and keeping a postive attitude in what seems a down period.  Keep active, keep busy and things will happen.

Randy, Thanks for the tips!  I do try and surround myself with positive people because it is too easy to "feed" the blues with negativity!

Randy: I recall during a career night i atteneded at my first broker that there was a slide that showed people on a roller coaster with the caption being something like be aware this business is an emotional roller coaster and if you aren't used to it it can be very stressful. Prospecting and CRM stratgegies can help somewhat to level out the ups and downs. Cheers!

Good post Randy...I find volunteering does put things into perspective!  And as you say, if you're always learning you have a better chance of avoiding repeating past mistakes!

You have put together a good list to help us stay grounded.  Speaking of country songs, how about incorporating this lament into one of your favorite songs and posting it here.
