Change - sometimes we just have to rethink how things are done!

By
Real Estate Agent

There are just too many things that we do in real estate that need to be changed. Updated to fit the timeschange, and the ways that business is currently done. This post is about how Realtors® just hold so steadfast to the 'old ways', the 'old ways of doing things'.  I think that some changes need to happen soon.

Most agents I know hate change and I wish I had a nickel for everyone that said 'we've always done it this way'.  But things really do need to change and I think agents know it.  We've had a violent shake up of our business and I believe that more is set to come.  We have to be flexible and bend with the new winds that will blow our way.  Change or be run over.

What things in your business do you need to loose?  What things are no longer productive only you won't admit it?

  • Taking listings that are not going to sell and you know it!  The sellers are not a fault, the market has lowered their homes value and they are NOT going to get out without bringing money to the table.  Why not give the listing back?  It is not going to sell.
Valuable time, energy and effort (secretarial efforts, internet efforts, overall time) is being spent on something that is not clearly going to happen.  Why not do what needs to be done?

  • When listing rental properties for lease why do we schedule showings on properties that are clearly in disarray?  Movers are scheduled and packing has begun, why show the listing?  Most prospective tenants say the house shows like a disaster at this time - yeah! they are right, so why do we continue to do it?

Just asking ...... as the practice is not clearly in our interests or our landlords interests to show a property that looks like a bomb blast.  Only we continue to do it?  Why?  Just because it's always been done?  We get excited for that elusive showing but are disappointed then by the negative feedback.  We've set ourselves up for a bad result.

change,Are all your real estate practices effective?

It's time to start changing a few old habits that just don't fit our needs.

I'm starting today.  What about you?

Real Estate, just like life is ever changing.  We need to change also or go the way of the dinosaur.

I can see you love change - I love the banner!  How fun is that!  I must follow suit and change my picture to my halloween gitup from last year.  Change is good!

Lyn ~ Giving a listing back to the seller when you've put so much into it is a big deal for many. I have threatened (quietly & cowardly) to drop a particular listing in my inventory for several months now, but I take her extensions. I am tired of asking the seller to lower their price at this point and if it's not under contract by next week, it's going back. Gotta cut my losses! Change is difficult no matter the profession...I'm just lucky to have joined back into this business when everything was changing...keeps me fluid and flexible!

I love your blog.  Very lively!  And, yes, we do need to change.  Even this old dog is learning new tricks!  One of them was joining Active Rain on 9/30!  Here's to an exciting adventure!

Ron: Welcome, there is lots of great things to learn here.

Anna: Thank you.

Bill:  Yes, it's true & lately we've had many changes thruout our industry. Just questioning some old practices if they are even worthwhile any longer.  If no one questions them, they just continue.
