Bribe Watch...FYI

I'm not sure by who - but I was emailed this link and thought it prudent to pass it on to everyone who cares to stay informed on the issues.

I'm always interested to know what's going on when it comes to backroom dealings and deals done without integrity.  I suppose that's why we're so interested in the proceedings in the Knox County government, the Sevier County government and how these associated issues affect the surrounding communities.

We as citizens should always work hard to stay informed so we can make informed decisions.  Unfortunately the statement "They're gonna do what they wanna do anyway" seems to permeate those who either don't, won't or refuse to become involved in the political process.

I hope that all of those who see this post will become involved in the political proces irrespective of their political affiliation.

The hardest part about this is that it gives EVERYONE a bad name. I suggest an inspector and because of situations like this it casts doubt on why I suggest him.

Toby,

I understand what you're saying. I'm not sure about 'gives EVERYONE a bad name' though.

I DO think we, as professionals, need to be held to a higher ethical standard.  Bribery, as evidenced by the website, isn't only limited to politicians.  I believe that when a REALTOR 'suggests' an inspection service it is incubent on the REALTOR to have checked out the inspector in order to protect themselves from any suggestion of questionalble ethics.  If this means avoiding certain organizations because of the appearence of ethical compromise, then that is what we owe the client.

In my humble opinoin, of course.

Douglas,

I very seriously question the validity of this particular web sites story. The story has no author. It is obviously written by someone who is extremely biased against NAHI. This statement from the opening paragraph is utterly without basis in fact.

NAHI, a Minneapolis based inspection trade association has been trying put the inspection industry's current Standards of Practices under the control of real estate agents, a move that could end inspection report impartiality for America's homebuyers. NAHI's attempt to convince ASTM International to rewrite the industry's current Standards of Practices and turn them over to a committee controlled major real estate companies would dilute the traditional arms-length distance between real estate agents and inspectors and harm consumers dramatically.

How would ASTM writing a national home inspection standard be putting the home inspection industry under the control of real estate agents? The entire statement is completely ludicrous.

Don't misunderstand me, I am not for an ASTM home inspection standard and do not back NAHI. But do not put links to such unfound tripe as this and try to pass it off as fact.

James,

I also share your concern.  As you know, I am a NACHI member.  I have sent an email to bribewatch.org to ask for confirmation of this email that they are said to have sent out, but haven't heard back at this time.  I will post their reply, if I receive one, when I get it.
