Tosca Restaurant in Hingham will host an interactive food and wine tasting to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14. The event will feature seasonal hors d'oeuvres by Tosca and a selection of international wines from local vendors. Space is limited and reservations may be made by calling Tosca at 781-740-0080 or in person with a manager at Tosca. The cost is $75 per person and checks may be made payable to JDRF; credit cards are also accepted. All proceeds benefit the JDRF.

Ed Kane, one of the owners of Eat Well, Inc. and Tosca said, "We are pleased to be able to support the efforts of JDRF in finding a cure for juvenile diabetes by hosting this event at Tosca. I have a personal connection with this disease and know how hard it can be on families and children."

Chef Kevin Long will prepare a tempting selection of seasonal hors d'oeuvres for the evening, including Island Creek Oyster Crudo, Foraged Mushroom Crespelles and Spiedini of Wagyu Beef.

The Tosca Interactive Food and Wine Tasting is also part of Team Hingham's participation in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. For the fourth year, families from Hingham who have children with Type 1 Diabetes will be walking together to raise funds to find a cure. This year's walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 29, on the Esplanade in Boston. There are approximately twelve families in Hingham that make up Team Hingham and unfortunately that number is growing as more children are being diagnosed each year.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on insulin for life and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While the causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic and environmental factors are involved. Each year over 13,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the U.S.

JDRF is an organization that was founded in 1970 by parents of children with diabetes and is the leading charitable fundraiser and advocate of Type 1 diabetes research worldwide. JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 research to date. The charity was recently rated one of the most effective in the country, with a fundraising efficiency rating of 91 percent given by Forbes Magazine.

June Blair, a Hingham resident whose 13-year old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes when she was four years old, helped to organize this event with Kane and Long.

June said, "Living with diabetes is difficult and life threatening, and is only controlled through rigorous attention to managing daily care and insulin injections. I'm grateful to everyone at Tosca for their willingness to help us raise the funds to find a cure."
