Did you ever hope to find a buried treasure when you were a kid? I did! And, I still do!! I have always been fascinated with searching for things... the end of the rainbow, a leprachaun's pot of gold, hidden treasures under creaky floor boards and back yard stashes of money in old canning jars. I devoured Nancy Drew mysteries and imagined that someday I'd be a great sleuth just like her.
When I discovered Geo Caching last year, I was hooked!! I convinced my husband (the outdoorsy type) that it would be a great family adventure. We went to the website for more information and to check out what caches were nearby and could be found in a relatively short amount of time since we were hunting with the whole gang from 12 years down to 2 months. Each cache has both a difficulty and terrain rating. We wanted an easy hunt with moderate terrain.
We read about a cache in a nearby park that we love and off we went. We had a blast hiking. We met a few horses, saw deer and raccoons and had fun splashing thru the creek. Following the GPS unit took a little getting used to (word of warning - make sure to occasionally look up LOL ). The hike wasn't a direct route and there were a few times we had to guess which path to take.
When we found the cache - it was like we had hit the lottery!! We danced around, hugging and hollering!! Then, we signed into the log book, swapped some treasures (you get to exchange something you brought with an item in the cache) and headed for home. We also bought a log book for us to track our hunts and you could easily track them online through the website as well.
Since the first hunt, we've gone on several "virtual" hunts as well as traditional hunts. Check out how many caches are near you by visiting the website and searching by zipcode. This is an international hobby. So, the next time you're in Rome, do a little treasure hunting! You never know what you'll find.
