A Ghost Story I Heard Often While Growing Up - a haunted restaurant in Clayton, CA
As Halloween is approaching, I started to think about a haunted restaurant in the town next to mine, La Croquett. I remember hearing this ghost story as I was growing up here in the area. I believe La Croquett is now Moresi's, but the story remains.
Apparently the building was standing in 1857, one of the first buildings when the town of Clayton was founded. Across the street is a saloon (still there, I believe, but certainly with a different name). According to the story, a miner from the Black Diamond Mines area got into a fight there. When the argument turned into a shoot out, one of the bullets went through the window and struck a little girl playing in the street. The people on the street brought the little girl into the restaurant, where she died in a pool of blood on the floor. It is said that she can be seen playing in front of the restaurant and often in the kitchen area. It is also said that the blood stain, to this day, remains and cannot be removed; nothing works and the stain always returns.
I've always wanted to visit this restaurant but for some reason never have. Probably because it was a French restaurant for a very long time, and French food is not often very "vegetarian friendly". Now it is a chophouse. I may have to go in for a salad and side dish and see if I notice any activity.
What really surprised me when researching this story to make sure I remembered it correctly is that there are FIVE commonly listed haunted spots in the small town of Clayton, CA! I found them on numerous blogs and websites, they are:
- La Croquett, above
- Pioneer Inn
- Eagle Saloon/Clayton Club
- Keller Mansion
- Morgan Territory Road
That's a lot for a small town? Here is the blog I read while checking facts for this article. Except for the Keller Mansion, I believe these are all places you can easily visit if you want to look for yourself!
Have a happy and safe Halloween!
