Was It "Paying It Forward" or Doing The Right Thing?
I have several AR friends that have joined the "Pay It Forward" Accountability Group and are looking forward to sharing with a community who is always trying to do something good. How wonderful to be part of setting a higher bar in the blog community.
About a month ago we ordered a microphone to go with our new Zi8 Kodak video camera. The wireless mic was a bit more than we wanted to spend so got the small mic with a 20 ft cord. That way the voice is clear and loud and the camera does not have to be right in the persons face.
We were going to London the last week in September so wanted the mic so we could record video of a meet up with a social media friend I met on facebook. Her name is Sadie Harris and she lives in France and is a concierge for anyone coming to France. We had a meeting we were attending in London and were only in town for 4 days so did not have time to run up to France for a meet up. I explained this to Sadie and she said she would fly into London and we could have lunch! We were elated and met her at the London Eye and had lunch at Chez Gerard close to Waterloo station. The meeting was great and the videos were wonderful!
Back to the microphone....the time got away and it was 5 days from departure and the mic was still not in Williams, Arizona. We had ordered over the internet in plenty of time. My husband called and told them our dilemma and they sent another one which arrive the day before we left. We were very happy with the service and that we had our microphone for the London adventure.
When we returned home the original microphone arrived so we now had two. This is where the fine line comes between paying it forward or doing the right thing. Maybe we were paying it forward because we were going to send the 2nd microphone back to the company with no obligation to do so except the fact it was the right thing to do.
My husband called the company and they were very confused as to why we were sending it backand so heexplained several times. He got a return label and it will be in the mail tomorrow. It's like returning excess change when the clerk gives you too much back. It's the right thing to do.
Tammy ~ It really was great of the company and I should tweet or yelp about them... so you are helping me pay it forwrad better.. It is unusual these days to have a company jump as fat as they did!
Kathy ~ It was so fun to meet a facebook friend... it was funny as she was thinking how strange it was to fly to London just for lunch with someone she didn't even know... but she see what I write everyday on facebook and how I interact so she was ok with it.. we did more videos and I need to get them up and out! The international connections in social media are really just amazing!
Carra ~ Is there ever a real question about doing the right thing? I don't believe so. Times may be challenging, yet doing good to and for others is one of the reasons we are in this business, right? Glad you had a fun trip. Don't you just love the idea of popping over to London to have lunch with strangers? I think it's cool. It makes the world a smaller place. Cheerio!
Carra, It's sad when the common place way of doing things isn't the right thing and it confuses people when you try to do the right thing! Wonderful that Sadie popped over to London to meet you!
Carra...a wonderful post so true to you...many don't see it this way & it's changing our culture into 'its mine' ...thanks so much for sharing & what a great trip you had too.

Definitely the right thing to do, Carra. I was just at the London Eye and I think I might have passed Chez Gerard come to think of it.
Carra, It is the right thing to do … and doing the right thing is paying it forward.
Howdy and evening to you Carra

What a great story! Although I had no idea we were supposed to return excess change that the clerk gave us. J
