General Electric recalls 174,000 dishwashers

http://www.russel-ray.comThe Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of 174,000 General Electric dishwashers. Apparently water can drip onto the electronic control board, causing it to overheat and short circuit, resulting in a fire hazard.

Although there have been no injuries or deaths, there have been five incidents of the dishwashers catching on fire and causing damage to nearby countertops and cabinets, as well as consequential smoke and water damage to the home.

http://www.russel-ray.comThe affected dishwashers were manufactured in the United States and includes GE Profile dishwashers manufactured between July 2003 and December 2005, and GE Monogram dishwashers manufactured between January 2004 and December 2006. Only certain model and serial numbers are affected; see the official recall notice to determine whether your unit is affected and where to find the model and serial numbers on your unit.

The CPSC says that consumers should stop using their units immediately and either unplug the units or turn off the circuit breaker to the unit. (If the circuit breakers in your electric panel are not labeled, have an electrician label them properly.)

Owners should contact GE for a free in-home repair, although you can also choose a GE rebate of $200 or $400 towards the purchase of a new GE Profile dishwasher or a new GE Monogram dishwasher, respectively.

GE can be contacted toll-free at 877-275-6840 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, or you can visit the GE website at www.geappliances.com/recall.
