Halloween is a fun time of year; we have parties to attend, and trick or treaters to buy for. Scary Decorations to put up, and fall plants to buy. But, let's not forget our furry, four-legged friends this Halloween, and what we can do to keep them safe and happy. Here are a few Halloween safety tips for your pets courtesy of ASPCA.

1. Keep the treat bowl away from Fluffy and Spot. Chocolate in all forms can be dangerous for cats and dogs. Dark and baking chocolate are especially dangerous. Artificial sweeteners found in many candies can also cause problems for your pet. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888)426-4435.

2. Decorative corn and other festive Halloween plants are relatively non-toxic, but can cause your little prince or princess to have a tummy ache if they chew or nibble on them.

3. Keep wires and cords for Halloween decorations away from your pets reach to help keep pets safe.

4. Use caution when placing lit candles inside of pumpkins. Pets can easily knock these over causing a fire hazard. Kittens are especially curious and can be burned or singed by candle flames.

5. Only dress up your pooch that enjoys to be fashionable. For pets who like only their birthday suit, dressing up can cause them emotional stress and upset.

6. Inspect all pet costumes closely. Look for small pieces that can be chewed off and choked on. Ensure the costume fits properly. Ill-fitting costumes can cause injury. Costumes should not restrict movement, breathing, hearing, or their ability to bark or meow.

7. Keep your pets away from the front door during high trick or treat times. Too many strangers can cause stress for your pet.

8. If your pet is super social and will be participating in the trick or treat fun, ensure they do not dart out the front door when opened.

9. Ensure your pet has proper ID on them at all times.

10. Consider keeping pets in a separate room during parties and gatherings. Scary costumes and strange faces can scare your pet.

I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween this year with your pets! Trick or Treat! For more information on ASPCA and pet safety visit www.aspca.org.

My safety for my pet this year is to simply not decorate.  My Zoey is way to excitable.  The only decoration that I have up this year is giant rubber rat.  The crazy dog woke us up in the middle of the night.  She was standing in front of the rat and barking at it.  I just shook my head and went back to bed.
