We all leave footsteps along the way. Some are intentional. Some are not. But either way, there is a path we all leave.

I was browsing through the Severn Bridge last night. I kept looking at the front cover but somehow between the phones ringing and the paperwork piling up and the home inspection discoveries and the contracts and then even more paperwork, I was not aware of what drew me to the front cover of my Severn School Bridge Alumni Publication.

Then it hit me. It was a photo of a young girl holding a single rose at Graduation. But for me, it was a HUGE moment.

When I graduated from Severn, I casually mentioned to my Mom that it would be really cool if each girl walked down the aisle to get her diploma carrying a single rose. End of thought. But my Mom, being my Mom, showed up with maybe a dozen single roses. I still have the photo. It is on the laptop that crashed so it will take a while to dig it up. But we were the first few classes of girls that graduated once Severn went coed. No wonder I work with so many men finding or selling their homes..I was just used to being around a lot of men.

Anyway, it struck me. I wonder if the tradition continued. Like when I discovered Severn still hosts the Powderpuff Games that I started because my best childhood bud, Suzanne, enjoyed the Powderpuff Football games at Ft. Hunt. Or was it a mere fluke? Then, right in the front row I see the name Wooddell. I figure that is Woody's daughter. How neat to see her with her single rose. I had to just kind of grasp that thought. The Bridge is still lying out so I can take in this thought and ,of course, I cannot wait to show my Mom the current Severn Bridge.

I saw names and faces I recognized. I saw cool websites and events. I saw a place I loved then and love now. I just spent a few hours last Saturday with a few Alums after an Annapolis appointment so it was extra fun to receive the publication right afterward. You notice things like one student is also going to Va Tech. But what is really cool is that no matter how different it is, Severn is still very much the same. I can join a group of Alums decades later and feel like I can continue a conversation mid sentence from where it was left off many moons ago. And then also enjoy the same laughter or lighthearted remarks now as way back then.

I hope someday the Chesapeake Beach Komen Boardwalkathon event RE/MAX hosts every year is still up and running. Those will be some really extra special footsteps. The rose...well a rose is always a rose. What a special photo on the cover of the Severn Bridge, and what a nice thought that perhaps a tradition has possibly endured.

It's funny how a small thing or a fleeting moment can trigger such a nice and strong memory.
