Today my mom and dad voted for the first time!

They became citizens on January 18 2006. They were sworn in by US district Chief Judge Steven McAuliffe (husband of Christa our NH teacher in space who died when the Challenger blew up), they were amongst 369 newly selected citizens of the USA.  It was indeed a proud moment as you can see by the beaming faces of Hans and Elfriede. The ceremony was very special ...... which will not be forgotten by those of us watching.

Today as they went to vote they were a little bit nervous- the whole ballot thing but the directions were clear and they cast their votes. I am so very proud of them...I just had to share.

Monika,

I remember the day you told us all that they were now US citizens and sent us pictures....a proud day all the way around! And good for them!  Their first opportunity to vote here in America......just think how many Americans don't exercise their right to vote.

Thanks for the reminder of one of our rights and freedoms here in America...great pictures!

Monika, I became Naturalized Citizen in 1972 and I can still remember going to vote for the first time. It was exciting and scary at the same time.

Ann is right, too many Americans take this for granted.

Monika,

That is great!  My husband just became a citizen in July, and this was his second time to vote.  I took his picture at the August primaries.  There was very low turnout for that election, but I bet Dmitry will never miss an election.

Thanks Maureen. I think my folks will make a special effort to go and vote at every election as well. It was so nice to see the excitement on their faces.  I bet your hubby was incredibly excited.  Makes me realize just how much we take for granted when we see how proud other people are, like my parents and your husband when they become a citizen of the United States of America. I know my folks worked hard at it. Studied the book and went through the stress of the test...not easy at my folk's age.  Congratulations to your husband!!! Thanks for your comment.
