Can I Make Money Surf Fishing on Long Beach Island?

You bet!  It's October, and it's the Annual Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic which began on the 9th and runs through December 5th.  The striped bass and blue fish competition offers daily, weekly and grand cash prizes in general, children’s, student, ladies and seniors categories.

http://www.lbift.com/PhotoPages/RSullivan.htmIt's early on in the competition, and current record striped bass (caught on October 22, 2010) stands at 56.44 pounds caught in Haven Beach, on the south end of Long Beach Island by Ray Sullivan.

That's the largest in Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic history.  But Bob Misak, from Barneget Light Bait and Tackle, predicts a 60 pounder will be caught before the LBI Surf Fishing tournament ends on December 5th.

Nearly 1,000 anglers register each year for the LBI Surf Fishing Classic.   During the six-week fall tournament, anglers weigh in striped bass and bluefish to compete for thousands of dollars of tournament-sponsored daily, weekly, segment, and grand prizes.

The Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, with support from the business community, sponsors the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Tournament.  Fish must be caught from the shores of Long Beach Island only—ocean, inlet, bay, and jetties.  You must report where the fish was caught when weighing in. No boat fishing permitted.

Some other guidelines are:
Contestants may use no more than two rods at any one time.
From the time that a fish strikes or takes a bait or lure, the angler must hook, fight, and land the fish without the aid of any other person.
Minimum length for bluefish is 32 inches. Each angler may enter two bluefish each tournament day.
Minimum length for bass is 34 inches. Each angler may enter two striped bass each tournament day.

Registration is $30. for the entire tournament and you must register before fishing.  Registration, and weigh in, is available at:

Laura, My grandfather, who was from Atlantic City, loved to fish and I'm sure he would be there if he were around today. I had always wanted to go with sometime but never got the opportunity. No ocean fishing here in North Dakota.

Laura, that's quite a striper he's holding...no ocean fishing here in northern Alabama, but just a few hours south and it's a different story.
