As I wonder what to do for Halloween this year, I have to think back at some of the "Haunted Houses" I've previewed or shown buyer clients in the past.  It never stops amazing me that there are sellers out there in the real estate market that haven't a clue of how potential buyer's perceive the property.

Here are just a few examples of some haunted houses I'm shown clients:

  • Home in central Dallas, TX area - great location: walked in the home as the homeowner was watching porn. She did quickly turn off the television but had actually invited us to come in the door when the doorbell was rang. CREEPY!
  • Home in the Dallas, TX area - centrally located, priced well: greeted by two snarling dogs. The appointment service had indicated that the dogs were friendly and would be in a crate. Not so! Luckily, we left before any injuries.

  • Home in a northern suburb of Dallas, TX - greeted at the front door with a stench so horrible that two hours later, the smell was clearly in my mind and in my nose.  The stench was cat urine, dog urine, or both.  A shame because at first look, the house was immaculate, however my buyer (and myself) couldn't get over that smell. YUK!

  • Home in east Dallas, TX - neighborhood a little scary. Just driving down the street gave us an eerie feeling as there were broken down vehicles lined along the street and overflowing in driveways. It was Christmas in July as holiday lighting still hung from many rooftops.

  • Home in Denton, TX -the house across the street from my listing was decorated with silk and plastic flowers.  Not just a few in the flower beds, but the entire front yard filled with colorful faux flowers, not to mention the other decorations. Needless to say, the house was an eyesore and my listing didn't sell before we had to reduce the price by 30%. Complaints to the city had no affect as a year later, the flowers were still there.

  • House in Irving, TX - this house was nestled in a golf course community. Priced very low, at first glance we couldn't understand why, however as we walked through the house, then down a stairway that led to the garage, we quickly realized the house was a drug house - most likely a methamphetamine or crack laboratory as there had been a basement dug under the garage.  A basement with plumbing, ramps and a single light dangling from top.  There was also a lookout balcony. EEEEK!

Please fellow peers and agents, Tell me I'm not alone in seeing HAUNTED HOUSES year round?!!!!!!!!
