iPhone vs. Blackberry - Can I Have YOUR Comps!?

By
Real Estate Agent with REMAX CREST REALTY WESTSIDE v60121

Blackberry vs. IphoneThis is a working article, and YOUR input is ESSENTIAL, below.

I've been doing some research about iPhones and Blackberries for weeks.  I've been a die-hard BlackBerry user for the last 3 years - and I've changed my ways - noticing that it's hard to adopt alternative technologies for BB users, among other reasons that become clear when you read the rest of this post.

So, I've tried to be as objective as possible to get the best TOOL for my profession: Real Estate.

The outcome of my search will be at the END of this short article because I dont want to bias anyone until they've read all of it.

When you read commentary about iPhones and Blackberries they are either:
(1) dated, or
(2) based on very low-tech expectations, or
(3) are simply not reflective a larger matrix of features that each phone offers, or
(4) worst of all, they are too prosaic, lacking simple points of comparison.

I thought it's about time to have some SIMPLE AND HONEST COMPS we could all contribute to.

So here goes:

     BlackBerry                     Vs.              iPhone

1. more affordable, no wait lists VS a dash more expensive to buy, with possible wait lists
2. longer bat life, less screen, a bit lighter  VS 15% shorter bat life, but daily charging is adequate
3. not as graphically endowed, but takes 2.0mp photos  VS watch/make films, with 5.0+ mp camera
4. qwerty design, like a PC  VS fancy GUI touchscreen design, just like MACs
5. a fair amount of applications  VS 25,000+ applications, 50+ are FREE, jail-breakable!
6. have been around for longer, time tested  VS have only been around 2+ years, fairly well tested
7. attractive and sexy  VS seems to have EXTREME sex appeal
8. integrate-able with PCs mostly  VS integrate-able with MAC AND PCs too
9. body of phone is multi-pieced, falls into pieces  VS singular body, more sturdy and resilient
10. MLS supported and convenient  VS won't go on the MLS, except for public ones
11. screen is 1/2 size of a mac, or less  VS HUGE screen, NO squinting on this one.
12. replaces SOME laptop features  VS MORE laptop in your palm than a BB
13. Skype supported  VS MORE skype features available on iPhone.
14. GPS is ok  VS GPS is lightning FAST and more CONFIGURABLE
15. Google maps show some real estate listings  VS Google maps QUICKLY REFRESH/OPEN houses
16. TRY watching Videos on this one...  VS i can WATCH REAL ESTATE Videos AND do email.
17. fairly affordable to use with my plan VS equally affordable as Blackberry, in my city.

...I'm sure there are WAY MORE COMPS for this but I need you to help me out with this...

What do you have to say?

Nice comparison, Jark. Though I may not agree with 'waiting period' for iPhone. Is that true in your market?

17-point comparison is detailed enough - but I bought iPhone - just because I wanted it!

Praful, fortunately I didn't have to wait at all.  The Apple store close to my house was stocked full of them and I was in and out in about 25 minutes with a newply configured operating device.  They really have it together and they're organized to the extreme.  Now, dare I say, I have another alarm-clock handy (my blackberry I mean), haha.  Cheers.

Thanks for this comparison.  My issue with the Iphone is that you have to pay for most of the apps and that Apple bundles hardware and software.  I'm waiting for the google phones......

Chrissy - I've heard good things about Droid, but unfortunately nobody in my office has one so I coudln't really get any face to face commentary on it.

Elizabeth - fortunately we don't need to tie ourselves with At&T in Canada, all the providers can carry iPhone.  I actually left my provider of over 8 years for Rogers as they were more competitive and, let me tell you, the best service I've had each time.

Kate - I hear ya, but the number of apps that are free or negotiably free are on the rise.  I'm hopeful for Google, but I think they are way more salesmanly than Rogers, I'm afraid.  In fact I'm a bit terrifed of Google, in that they are still such a young company you know.

I have been dealing with this comparrison for several years and even gave my first iphone away to my son.

Bb: can teather my pc to the internet  iphone can not  It would cost an extra $30 a month to get an internet card for the computer. This is essential to me.

bb can sink calander to outlook  don't know if iphone does but I don't think so

bb  can use verizon  iphone need att&t which does not work well at my house

Droid is probably my next phone, especially now that it has flash

Hi Jark,

For me it was the Palm vs the Droid.

I never like the BB and the iphone is married to AT&T who I hate,

Palm pilot opened my keyboxes for over a decade. Was sorry to leave it.

Now I am on the Droid and love it!

Debra, you HAVE to watch this video, it will help you decide - in additional to the article and the relevant comments above as well - let me know what you think of this: http://www.apple.com/ca/iphone/design/index.html#design-video

Cheers, Jark.

I see..... it seems like the 4 is worth the extra cost! Not sure I like the face time though... I'm a bit camera shy!
