What are the fundamental differences between Conservatives and Liberals?

With the 2010 elections coming up next week, I have been doing some soul searching on political positions and trying to get an honest grip of how my beliefs might fit in on a "standardized scale".  I feel that I am uniquely blessed to have lived in many different countries and many different states so that I have been exposed to many different mind sets instead of just growing up with a one town mindset.

I don't know who to trust in politics these days with all the negative campaigning that is happening not only here in Boise, Idaho; but is occurring nationwide.  I have seen more than one major candidate physically change party affiliations to gain votes as the political climate changes from one election cycle to the next.

I have struggled every election year with comments about:

  • Republican vs. Democrat;
  • Right wing vs. left wing;
  • Conservative vs. Liberal
I have looked for a "standardized test" that I could take that would try to give me an unbiased benchmark of where I stood but have never been able to find one.  Today, I ran across this website that did what appears to be a pretty good job of outlining some of the major issues facing our society in America today and how the traditional viewpoints of both the Conservative and the Liberal vantage points might be perceived.

This is bound to be a bit controversial in that it does make reference to stands on abortion, death penalty, etc., but these issues won't go away with or without talking about them so I didn't edit them out.

I am not a party line voter, but based on this chart, I can at least see that my beliefs do tend to be more conservative and Republican based.  I am also very open minded via religions and if I ever saw a chart like this showing Catholics, LDS (Morman), Jewish, Buddhist, Christian, Methodist, Muslim, etc., I would probably be just as guilty as picking and choosing my own path!

Jim - why take a test, you know what you stand for, just make sure that the candidates and issues that you vote for support similar positions.

WOW!  That's quite a comprehensive description of what the terms we hear tossed around daily real mean.

Clearly written for student populations and clearly matters of interest to families, not schools.

Perception vs. Reality is a valuable topic as well.  Years ago, I coined my own definition of "selective perception" in which the deliverer of a message selects what "facts" they want you to perceive.

@Mike, I wish there was a position statement for these types of issues and that each candidate would just state for the record where they stand.  Unfortunately, most just say they are pro families, education, improving public good, reducing government spending, reducing taxes and improving services; then many go out and slam  their opponent with negative campaign ads skewing facts confusing the issue.

@Lenn With you living near our nations capital isn't it interesting to see the impact on housing when the President changes from Republican to Democrat and visa versa.  I know that was certainly the case when I lived in Northern Virginia 20 years ago.  Truly an out with the old, in with the new mindset.
