Is It A Blog, A Tweet Or An Essay?Building blocks

A good blog should be informative, keep the reader interested and provide something useful. There are some key building blocks that you can use to make your blog more effective. If the blog is to short, then will it be lacking in information, lacking content and the reader will just cruise on by. If the blog is to long winded with not much quality content you lose the reader and off they go to another blog. Just like our children, our blogs are a reflection of us, representing what you do, so put your best foot forward.

How to know if your blogs are reaching people?

·        Take a look at the comments, first are you getting many and second are they interactive comments or not?

·        Are you getting any re-blogs on your ActiveRain (AR) posts?

·        You can see how many views and clicks each AR blog has under the Statistic button which is on the AR ‘More about me’ page.

For me what makes a good blog:

·        Get to the point.

·        Provide information, entertainment, engagement

·        Provide links & websites

·        Make it interesting, pictures and short videos are great

Here are a few of my favorite AR bloggers and sample posts that I think are good examples of how to blog. (I have many more on my AR Blog Subscriptions list.)

Here are two ActiveRain posts that will help you become that better blogger and drive traffic to your front door.

It is the quality of the blog, not the quantity of the blog (no junk blogs). We all know the duck test “If it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck…..” We all want to that drive traffic to our front door, stand out of the crowd, think outside of the box, be engaging and most important enjoy and have fun on ActiveRain ~ GOOD LUCK.

Thanks Christine, I actually had fun writing this and the more I blog the more I learn. I strongly believe in passing on tips and info to others, competition makes us each better.

Great points, David!  Adding a picture or clip-art can make the difference in featured posts too!  Few are attracted to posts without them.

That's a sharp-looking blog post there, I must say.  I suddenly feel dull and inadequate.

But GREAT points about blogging.  Thanks for sharing!

I am oddly finding out that the daily posts that I have been doing since the 30 in 30 days contest have gotten as many if not more comments than before...and these posts are off the top of my head. Go figure!

Once again AR members thanks for all the comments and inputs. I usually find very useful information on the comments as well as in the blog, so many different views and experiences. I truly believe in a blog you share your knowledge and let others learn... whats the saying " an educated consumer is our best customer"

You mention tweets in your title: I can't tell you how much I appreciate honest tweeting and not using Twitter as merely a way to send people interesting articles. It can be used to TRULY connect to other professionals on a micro/on-the-move kind of level instead of a Google off-shoot to find articles. Thanks for the reminder to keep it simple.

I'm always looking for informative content, concepts that can help me in my business.

There's a fine line between "observations" and navel gazing.

A good set of rules to follow.  What you are saying is simply effective blogging is reaching your target audience and getting your desired results.

Ah more great comments, Thanks everyone.

  • Street, I use twitter all the time, amazing the information you can find once you set up subscriptions, such links as local Realtors, news, national building statistics, etc.
  • M.S., B.B., C.S. and G.W., you all got it, be pro-active and hit your desired audience.

Keep on Bloggin'

David-thanks for your post and all good points.  I would disagree on comments as an indicator as to whether a post is successful or not.  Since I have outside comments turned off some of my posts would appear they don't have any traction. Yet the same post on my Wordpress blog could have 60 comments.  The difference is that I have control over the spam on Wordpress and I don't on AR.  Just something to consider when we try to sort our target markets out.
