Santa Cruz County: Life in a Unique Beach Community

26 th Ave., Santa Cruz, CA, September 2007

In November, it will be 10 years since I moved from Silicon Valley to Santa Cruz County. Living in a beach community is wonderful beyond compare. Yesterday was Labor Day, and instead of sitting in traffic for hours trying to get to a beach, I drove a couple of miles to 26th Avenue, one of the most beautiful beaches slightly North of Pleasure Point. The waves were incredible. My grandson commented that it was like "watching a show" - surfers, boogie-boarders, skim boarders - the day was clear and bright.

I think September and October are two of the best beach months in Santa Cruz. It's hard to imagine how people live in places that are not so naturally beautiful and inspirational.

"From the mountains to the sea" is a slogan many Realtors in the area use. Where else do you get the stimulating combination of a university town (UCSC), several eclectic beach towns, each with their own unique character (Davenport to Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, Seacliff, Rio Del Mar, Seascape, Manresa, LaSelva BeachSunset Beach, just to name a few).

I feel so lucky to live here.

Feel free to join me, if the spirit moves you!

Hey Cristy: Come on down (or West! It is absolutely gorgeous here. I took the picture just minutes ago - on Labor Day I didn't have my camera (natch!). The waves were much bigger and the crowds much heavier. Today, just a few surfers and dogs playing in the waves. I clicked on your profile and love it. Your pictures are also awesome. Please look me up when you come to town for a beach vacation!

Deborah: As you know, I used to own a house on 21st Ave. Oh, boy, do I miss it. One of my big goals is to get back in the area. There are some condos at the end of 22nd, right on the water near the lagoon. What do they sell for? Any idea? Maybe someday when the next refi boom happens you can sell me another beach place! Meanwhile, I am jealous that you live there.

Hi Janet: Wow! 21st Avenue is heaven - often recommended as the best boogie boarding beach by a friend. I will check on the condos for you . . . I can tell you right now that there is a condo on East Cliff Drive, right at Pleasure Point that is very well priced. The thing about unincorporated areas like Pleasure Point and Live Oak, in general, is the potential vacation rental income. I know some people who move out of their homes during vacation season and can live off of the proceeds for the rest of the year. The income potential is extremely lucrative, especially close to the beach, but even not-so-close . . . there are no known regulations other than a vacation tax! Phenomenal!

Hi there Bill & Barbara: To me, it is like a mini-vacation to look at the ocean or even a picture of the ocean. Thanks for stopping by.
