Gearing up for the November 2nd election in Polk County~Chairperson training at River Place

Unless you've been hiding in a cave somewhere you've probably heard that mid-term elections are going to be held in Polk County and around the nation on Tuesday November 2nd. In preparation all 183 precinct chairs and co-chairs for Polk County's 183 precincts were required to attend a mandatory training session today at the county's new River Place offices.

If you haven't been to River Place and you're a resident of the county you really owe it to yourself to check it out. After a renovation of over $6,000,000, including recent construction of a flood wall, the old Target and former strip mall at 2309 Euclid is now home to these county offices that were formerly scattered across the metro in rented space: Veteran Affairs, Juvenile Court Offices, Community, Family & Youth Services (Crisis and Advocacy, Family Enrichment Center & Supplemental Foods), IA Department of Human Services (Polk County & District Office), and County Sheriff (Administration & Civil divisions). It's a gleaming artifice of glass, steel and concrete that while being utilitarian, is also a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing facility that residents can be proud of.

On hand to present and answer questions were Jamie Fitzgerald, Polk County Auditor, John Chiodo, Elections Manager and Steve Mauro 2nd Deputy Auditor. Maybe it's just an act, but these guys seem to work well together and really appear to enjoy what they are doing.

As usual, there are some changes to procedures to be aware for this election, and lots of questions from the chairs. By the show of hands this morning, an overwhelming majority of those in attendance had chaired precincts before so voters can expect the polls to be staffed by a well seasoned crew.

If you don't want to wait until Tuesday you can vote today,Friday the 29th, tomorrow, Saturday the 30th and Monday November 1st at the Polk County Auditors office at 120 2nd Avenue in Des Moines. You may also vote by absentee ballot until the first. All absentee ballots must be postmarked by the 1st to be counted. Ballots received this week after the election but postmarked with the correct date will be counted and tallied.

If you'd like to preview the issues and the candidates you can visit the auditors office or read about them by clicking through on this link: http://auditor.co.polk.ia.us/general_2010.htm

Every election is important so we should all do our whatever we can to make sure we get out an vote!

It's intersting to hear what is going on before the elections in various parts of the US.  Sounds like you should have a very good election experience.

Matt ... Hmmm ... hiding in a cave!?  Didn';t you see all the angst Geico got with comments like that!?  Good luck with your elections efforts. Were (are) you part of the precinct staff?
