Define Your Spaces or Clutter Your Soul

My personal thanks to Ana Hitzel from beautiful Corona, CA for this well written subject matter that needs to be taken to heart. I really benefited from Ana's post and I hope you will too.

Sounds a bit extreme?  Not.  We all live in spaces that we take for granted every day.  We get up out of bed, brush the teeth, comb our hair and run down the stairs to start the day in a mad rush.  Our surroundings can blend into the background of everyday living.  What many don't realize is that those surroundings may be causing additional stress.  Who needs more of that?

You may have heard a lot about defining the purpose of each space when you are getting ready to sell your home.  It is definitely important that you do this.  But what about those of us living our everyday lives and not planning to sell?

We have junk drawers, junk rooms and never mind the garage.  We just know that's what that particular space is for and don't bother with the details.  I think that is the worst way to live and can be very stressful.  Home is supposed to be a sanctuary, a retreat, a place to feel safe and cozy isn't it?

Before you chose to live in your current space, you may have had a thought or plan for it, right?  If it was presented properly during the selling process, you were given a few ideas that appealed to you when you were looking at it...or maybe not.

I say stop the insanity.  This can be a tough process depending on the size, condition and number of people using the space.  Start small; pick a room, any room.  I myself would pick the room that you either spend the most time in or the space you see first thing when you walk in after a very long day. Take a really good look.  What do you see?  How does it make you feel?  Are you sure you know what it's for or supposed to be for?

When you have decided what you want that particular space to be, stick to it.  Get rid of EVERYTHING in that room that has nothing to do with its purpose....NO CHEATING!  Your office should not be in your bedroom.  This is more common than it should be. That's for hotels, you don't live in a hotel do you!

I know. You say you don't have the room to do this.  Bunk! Just not true.  Even small areas can be defined if you are realistic about need and use.  One room can be turned into more than one purpose if layed out properly but both uses should be common in some way if possible.

Most all of us have too much stuff.  Once you get this process under way, you will feel your soul relaxing and your heart and head feeling lighter....really.

It may be a long process but worth it in the end.  Take it a day at a time and see how it feels each time you make a change.  Stand at the entry to the space now and remember how bad it used to feel.  Smile and pat yourself on the back.

And after all that, if the room is too spare or needs more umph and you are stuck....read my blog on choosing a style:)
