National Cherry Blossom FestivalA few weeks ago the Active Rain team posted another hyper-local contest, this time focused on events.  Posting about events isn’t anything new for me.  My first event post on Active Rain was in May 2007.  Since then I’ve posted events ranging from the local church pancake breakfast to big events in DC like the Cherry Blossom Festival.

Someone asked me at a recent conference if any of these posts ever led to a sale.   Honestly by themselves the answer is no.  However put them in together with other community posts and they become part of a bigger picture that become part of why a buyer or seller calls you instead of someone else.

Think about it.  You are working with a buyer who has called you about a local neighborhood.  Being able to show them not only the homes in the neighborhood, the neighborhood amenities  but also what types of events the HOA sponsors gives you an extra level of credibility.  The same is true with a seller.  What better way to be seen as a “neighborhood expert” than to know more than just stastics you gather from the MLS.

Things to Do in DC & VA MAPSo how do you find information on local events?  If you are looking for neighborhood specific information the HOA newsletter is the best first place to look.  If you can’t find a hardcopy, many of them are on-line.   If the event is open to the public make sure you don’t just blog about them but go and take photos.   If you are looking for broader community information you can often find them with Google Alerts and local newspapers.  Of course the best way is to be involved in your community.

As a member of and volunteer with a number of community organizations I have a wealth of information on events that comes my way.  My preference is to blog about as many FREE events as I can.  At a time when families are struggling with their budget knowing they can take the family their family out for an afternoon of fun for free is important.  My second goal is to help promote events for the non-profit groups I’m involved in.  Often the events are free but the money spent with event vendors is split with the organization helping them to lend a hand in the community.

If you missed the latest Active Rain contest geared around community events don't worry.  Though you may have missed a few extra points what you didn't miss was the chance to add local events to your hyper-local blogging plan.  At this time of year events are plentiful and who knows one of them might just lead to the next call from a buyer or seller.

We understand that that the various components of "advertising/blogging' add to the overall picture.  The difficult part is during business planning where one evaluates the return on investment of all the parts to decide what to continue for next year.

Cindy, I live in the destination resort community of Cannon Beach , in Oregon.

Our village is all about the arts and tourism and protecting what makes it unique. Most of my blogs have to do with events and I do try to have pictures of the event as well.

I have really enjoyed the enthusiastic comments from these blogs....and yes, it has brought me business.

Hannah-yes I'm planning on Philly.  Commuted from DC to Philly for a year so know the road or the train ride well.  I'll leave the speaking to the locals though.

Russell-glad you joined the contest, you always have good things to say about Austin.  I got a call yesterday from one of the organizations I blogged about asking me to help them with their social networking stragegy.
