Throughout the years of doing SEO on my vacation rental site I have searched google millions of times looking for sites to get links from, what sites are having success with, etc. and it always has seemed to me that google was very conissitent in its ranking factors.

Just recently Google started an investment fund, Google Ventures.  Just recently they invested money in the largest vacation rental advertising company, HomeAway.  HomeAway owns a network of over a dozen sites all offering vacation rentals.

If they continue to invest in companies that gain the majority of their business from the web I feel it is a conflict of interest for them.  Naturally they are going to want companies they invest in to show up high in the search results, which they control.

Any thoughts?

It would be a conflict of interest, but it'd be a great business boon to them.  If it were me, I'd do it and find a way to get through the conflict.....You're right though....

Rob, Even though it may be a conflict I don't know that they will care.  I have been riding that Google merry go round for years now and it is always changing. I have however found that sound Search engine optimization flies over everything else.

I don't know if they will be biased or just more creative with the Google SEO.. Great thoughts!

If I were a betting man, I'd take the bet that they will miraculously have the company they own coming up at the top of the searches. It would be a simple programming ploy on their end. Good luck on staying on top of them or at least even.
