Official Announcement: In 2011, Independence Day will be celebrated on July 2.

Jack-o-lanternDid I grab your attention?  Concerned with the 4th of July shifting by a few days?

OK, perhaps I have overstepped my authority by changing the date of Independence Day (it really isn't, but it feels like before long someone might suggest it), but I have been annoyed all week by the seemingly continuous (and inconsistent) string of local announcements regarding when Halloween will be celebrated.  Yes, this is a Halloween rant.  Trick or Treat!

For the record, TODAY is Halloween.  It's a holiday.  It has a date.  Just as Independence Day is celebrated every year on July 4th and Christmas is celebrated every year on December 25, Halloween is October 31.

Would you celebrate Christmas on December 28th to accommodate the calendar?  Or would you celebrate New Years Eve on January 3rd?  Of course not, so the idea that Halloween has become a floating holiday annoys me.  And if it is going to officially float, then can't all the cities get together and come up with a consistent set of guidelines on when it will be celebrated?

Oh well... if nothing else, having to post about when each community will actually celebrate Halloween in the Dallas area will require a lot of blog posts for Halloween bloggers!  I know this is silly in the context of larger world events.  It just irks me!

Steve,

Feel free to rant.  There is something to be said for traditions and for not changing everything to suit someone else.

I was noticing this, too, in my little town of Madisonville. Halloween Parties and Trick-or-Treat events occur on several different days within the course of a week. I don't really observe the holiday, but I thought others who do would be more insistent on sticking to the 31st. *puzzled*
