Great Information Just Seems to Rain on Us Here in ActiveRain!

I am still WOWED by the constant stream of great information that seems to just come pouring in each day.  It arrives in the form of great posts such as this one without my having to search for it.

How many of you bloggers keep your tail between your legs?  Here is where you would want your tail to grow, to keep growing, and to flourish. It's all about the long tail.

Bob Stewart did this challenge, Local Events Challenge - Give them what they want - I participated in this challenge and wanted to share some basics with you when it came to key search words and the long tail.

Marilyn Boudreaux had just written about this also... Active Rain Success : Localism Posts work like magic. - Just a fyi, I already had this idea prior to reading Marilyn's post. I am just now getting around to it.  But Marilyn also talks about how AR can help you achieve these kinds of results also.

Long Tail key searches

This came from wikipedia in regards to the Long Tail. - "Recent long-tail keyword research has found that long-tail searches often exhibit a higher conversion rate by up to 200% compared to short-tail (generic) keywords, and can be extremely profitable for search engine marketers in terms of a lower cost per action and higher return on investment."

As you can see, there are more hits for the popular key words, but the less popular, the long tail, as less hits. But the key point here is that the long tail key words can drive more business to your more quickly. Why is this?  The popular key words are used by more bloggers and web sites. More people fighting over the popularity per se. With the more specific dragged out key words, you can pin point your business and get quicker results. In real estate, those that usually use the 'long tail' key words are usually closer to buying or selling.

So back to Bob's challenge and the long tail. I entered Bob's challenge and this is what I wrote.

I am using the 3rd post that I wrote, First Night Haddonfield, as my example. Please see below, in regards to how it is found on Google.

I took this screen shot 30 minutes after I published my First Night Haddonfield post and it showed up number 4 overall on page 1 of Google, out of 154,000 searches for the kew words First Night Haddonfield. If you search just First Night, there are over 801,000 searches for that key word alone. The web site www.firstnighthaddonfield.org that appears in the first 3 positions ahead of me, was on page 13 when just searching First Night.

In reality, this shows how you can market something more specific, to where you can get searched more when someone is looking for something specific. Hence why business and real estate can be very local.

When it comes to your long tail, you want to make sure it's mentioned in a few key spots, just the same way when mentioning your key search words. You want to make sure that your most important long tail is mentioned in the title, in the first paragraph, the last paragraph, and in your tag words. Now, I am not a true expert on this subject, because I am sure some people will tell you that it should be done in other places. But this is proof if done this way, that you can rank very quickly on a specific subject or in your specific area. And the longer the 'long tail', the more specific you will be, the better chances for more business on that subject. If there are a few people that have been blogging about that topic longer or more frequently, sometimes it could take a little longer to move up the ranks. But if you are consistent, you will own certain long tails. Just another great way to market yourself.

Barbara,

Thanks for reposting this blog.  I missed it the first time and it is good info.   Yes I was at Rain Camp here in NC last week and Bob talked about this very topic.  He and Ben Kinney discussed the Long Tail in depth.  It was very insightful and several days later I am still sifting through my notes to implement everything they discussed.

Larry, I am having a little Rain Camp envy.  It is hard to implement so much, but what a great problem that is...we have the information...we just need to use it.  Thanks for your comment and good luck in getting all the good Rain Camp stuff in action.
