Getting Around in Asheville

I'm always checking on what's happening down at the D.O.T... I wonder about Travel Patterns, in general...and I wonder about ten years from now. . .what will the polulation numbers in Asheville be like, how will it affect the way we get around.

Here in Asheville, the next ten years we expect  I-26 to be completed in the city. Homes along the current approaches may/will well be impacted... .

How will this affect getting around in Asheville pattern? The increasing mobility of workers over the last century has changed the relationship of urban and rural residents to the land. It has created a new genre of linkages between rural and urban areas, and altered the way we view regional economies. Rural areas increasingly are valued by residents who have economic ties to metropolitan areas. And whereas the suburban dream seemed delightful 50 years ago, it is in the "not-so-much" category at present.

Walkable communities (see photo) and eco-villages for which Asheville is well-known are more and more in demand these days as consumers realize that travel patterns that encourage sprawl leave future generations facing serious air quality and pollution issues. (The impact of traffic-related air pollution on public health is responsible for premature deaths, chronic bronchitis in adults and in children....)

It is great to know that Ashville has eco friendly communities that are concerned about the impact of growth.  I think too many communites are reactive rather than pro-active.

janeAnne,

Certainly love the endorsement for eco-communities.  Walking is definitely significant for better holistic health for people and their respective communities... g
