Inappropriate Marketing?

Reblogger Teddy Lim

Is it ok to put your business cards in the candy that you give away for trick or treating??? Or is it just crass and actually back-fire??? Our community members weigh in on this issue! Very interesting indeed :-)

As REALTORS® we use marketing to generate awareness of our brand and of the services we provide to generate interest from prospective customers in the hope to create a sale opportunity; there is nothing wrong with that...

But yesterday I was out trick or treating in the neighborhood with my 7 year old step son and one of the homes was giving more than candy to the kids; she was putting her business card in the children's candy bags.

It did not take long for one of the kids to notice the business card in his bag. All the other kids started looking inside their bags and they immediated tossed her business card away while the parents were laughing and making negative comments about this agent.

As I watched the entire situation develop, I could not help but wonder if this agent thought about the possibly that her marketing initiative was inappropriate for the occasion.

Help lots of people and have a great day!

I think that is crass and cheesy. Leave some days out of the marketing mix !! It may just backfire on her

I think you have to be careful and sensitive to the occasion.  My husband went to a funeral and there was a realtor there with her nametag on talking to the family.  Time and Place for everything.

I just think it is a waste of cards to do that.  Those are going to get tossed out by the kids and no parent will notice.  I dont think it will hurt the agent but it wont help her either.

Great idea for a post!  There are those who think cards should just be handed our willy nilly with no regard, and something will stick....

Great insight my friends! It's funny how a small little thing as an ill-timed slip of a business card can make or break you in our business (or communities). This one would definitely lie mostly on the eyes of the beholder - some may not care, some may care a little but the sneezers who will care enough, I think would be the ones telling the neighborhood about that one realtor who slipped his/her cards in the kids trick or treat basket lol! I don't think you would ever want to be known as that agent ever!!! :-)

That was pretty tacky. Halloween is for kids. What's her target market?
