Greetings from Estes Park!
On Monday, October 25, the Estes Park High School Marching Band was awarded the 4th Place Trophy in the Colorado Band Master’s Association State Championship event held at the Stoker Stadium in Grand Junction. The Bobcat Band performed “Music Of Howard Hanson”, featuring
“Chorale And Alleluia,” “Romantic Symphony,” and “Hanson Finale.”
Director Chuck Varilek leads the band in these annual competitions sponsored by the Colorado Bandmaster’s Association. This organization exists to promote music education through participation and performance in band by providing events that reward musical excellence. During competitions,
the bands are judged by CBA officials whose scores are based upon the categories of music performance, visual performance and general effects, both on individual and ensemble levels.
The EPHS Band began its qualification process on October 6, in Longmont, later winning the regional competition on October 13 in Loveland. Work on the show, however, began months before. Varilek stated, “we have a short music rehearsal every couple weeks during the summer, with a one-day band camp for everyone.” “In addition to a few Saturday morning practices, we practice during our band hour—that’s all the time we spend on our show, and the band members manage to stay competitive with the big schools.”
