The Only Kind of Identity Theft That Could Kill!

According to Security Management Magazine, when it comes to identity theft, one of the fastest-growing concerns is the improper use of medical information, according to a recent Ponemon Institute study. Costs for victims can be particularly high, and the crime can take especially long to recognize, the study said.

About 1.5 million Americans have suffered from medical identity fraud, according to the study, but it still constitutes a relatively small part of overall identity theft. About 9 percent of Americans have been victimized by identity theft, only 6 percent of those cases concerned medical Identity fraud.

But medical theft costs are particularly high. The total cost to consumers is about $29 billion, or about $20,000 per person. Effects can also include medical dangers, including misdiagnoses because the medical history now includes items that weren't really tied to the patient's own medical services. This can be particularly damaging in emergency situations in which a patient can't answer questions, some expert say "it's the only kind of identity theft that can kill."

This is just FYI only!

Thanks.

I pays to protect oneself in this day and age. I feel like everything I do is like rolling the dice. Do I buy peanut butter, do I buy lettuce...where is this product made or grown. It's all a gamble.

Wow why would anyone want my medical history?  That could really cost them.

Adam:

Identity theft is such a huge problem- the Internet makes this kind of crime easier than ever to pull off. Here in South Florida- a big scam is "Medical Offices"~ They have a little bus that picks up"patients" and delivers them to "Medical Offices"... The patients are rarely ever treated for anything.....They just use them to bill Medicare/Medicaid....

Whatever....Oh,I think the patients get prescriptions for some marketable narcotics too- this supplements the patients income nicely. There have been dozens of Arrests and Office closures recently....

Sad to see the lengths some will go to these days. Stealing a persons medical ID is just crazy.

Oh boy, what next?  Scary stuff...I was in for a simple test and they put a wristband on me...nope I didn't check it...just before they got ready to do the procedure they checked it and it was someone else's name and file attached to me...I learned a big lesson...I will check and recheck what they are doing to me and why!

Thanks for the headsup on this.
