The Metro Café in Culver City (Los Angeles) CA
Our visit to the Metro Café the other night was a complete surprise. In a good way, or I wouldn't take time to chat about it.
You sort of hate to spread the good word about some places, because then they might become too popular and crowded. That's the risk, I suppose, with the Metro Café.
The Metro Café, as it's called (the red neon sign outside declares it the Metro Diner), is rather non-descript, located on the first floor of the Travel Lodge. Not the sort of place lots of people would gravitate towards for a good dining experience.
They'd be wrong.
Our daughter and her husband had been a number of times and raved about it, so it was time to check it out - I'm glad we did.
The Metro Café is small, holding less than 40 or so I'd say, with a small counter area. It's pretty minimalist, but appealing, with some cool abstract art on the walls. The real star, however, is the food, which they say is Serbian America.
The dinner menu is not lengthy, but is varied, unique and loaded with surprises. We shared a grilled corn salad with arugula that was outstanding...and huge, enough for 1 person as a meal. I had a grilled salmon spaghettini that was wonderful, with a mix of flavors I couldn't readily identify but excellent nonetheless. Topped off with great bread and a good bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, dinner was a real treat.
I hear they have a terrific breakfast. That may be the next trip to LA.
