The idea of greening up sounds so overwhelming yet is so simple.  The whole point of my blogs is that going green saves you green.  It is not a matter of getting less, but of getting more out of what you already have

Which saves you money….which helps the environment.

So let us start with the kitchen:

  • If you are concerned about drinking water, buy a water filtration system.  Say no to expensive bottled water.
  • Cloth napkins instead of paper.  They can be used several times before washing.
  • Use less single-serve or single-use products.  Usually these products are more than 50% packaging.
  • Therefore, buy in bulk.  Avoiding useless packaging.
  • Always cover your pots when cooking.  It actually speeds up the process and saves you energy.
  • Let foods cool before putting them in the refrigerator, so as not to raise internal temperature.

If followed through for a whole year, the above six tips save the average home around $750.00 a year.

And that is just the kitchen.  The rest of the house will soon follow, stay tuned.

Douglas, a great kitchen list. Bottled water is ridiculous and I'm so guilty of doing it. Thanks, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the house!

Nice blog Douglas.  I never thought about leaving food out to cool before storing it in the refrigerator.  There have been very few "green" principles that I've become aware of that don't revolve around common sense.  If we would just spend time thinking a little more instead of running around doing things the way it's always been done.  Here are some related kitchen blogs of mine and I'll be finishing up a great one about bottled water soon.  General appliance tips    Dishwasher specific

Douglas, I might add to that using only cold water to wash dishes.  Here in FL most of the year I'm able to keep my hotwater heater off as the water is warmed by the temperature in the garage.  I've been able to save approximately $80 per month.  As for bottled water, I've never bought it because its rediculous to pay all that money for something you can get out of your tap!  Provdiding you have a good filtration system on your kitchen faucet, and then its questionable as to what actually gets filtered out.

Great ideas.  One caveat - cool your foods in an ice bath or under a fan to bring the temp down quickly, for safety reasons, before putting it in the fridge.  (Trick I learned in my professional cheffing days when studying food safety.)

Also, a water filtration system might be a problem with our hard water.  I can leave a glass out overnight with a bit of water in it and in the morning there will be white calcium deposits floating in the bottom of the glass.

Douglas I did a post about your post on my real blog....(linking to your blog and attributing the content  to you)  I have had comments on it.  Comments on a real blog aren't that common.  Two of them may be other Realtors but one is another blogger in Central Ohio, about an hour away from me. Not a bad thing.

It is always fun to put common sense to work. I often feel that we need to have note cards, laminated, around the house to remind us all what we need to do. I remember years ago hearing that it was important to turn off the water while brushing your teeth and finally, finally, I have made that a daily habit (Yes, I brush my teeth every day, mom!)

I did laugh at using the cloth napkins several times before washing. I think about that 14 year old kid that rents a room from us..oh my

I tried putting a clloth napkin away the other day after using it and got the 4th degree about whether I had wiped my mouth or hands on it... from a grown man.

We are using cloth napkins because of a recent trip to the zoo.  The Columbus Zoo has lots of stuff about conservation.and because we ran out of paper ones. Maybe I'll wipe my mands and mouth on my sleeve so I can reuse the cloth napkins from now on....

Great post! Where did you get the $750 statistic from? Thanks.

good post. It can actually speed the spoilage rate of other foods in the fridge too by warming them up if you put hot dishes in there with cold things.

Great tips, I had to jump in, I know i am there is not too much more to say than what the others said, I have discussed these with people on occasion, I am in the Green Kitchen Industry, and from time to time I have conversations with my clients that exceed my scope of work, when people want green cabinets and countertops, It's inevitable that Green as a way of life is not going to be talked about...Because of Green it seems like my clients turn into my friends...it is so different than the clients i who are not trying to make a little change towards green, my point is i will now be able to further my Kitchen conversation thanks to your list of suggestions.....  great work,  i see you work in Orlando, I am in the Tampa bay area...when is the cold front coming..still too hot, Gene

Gene - first of all, thank you for support.  I agree with you, people who are into the green movement are by the nature of the beast a more concerned citizen.  Which makes them better friend material as well.  I have noticed, though, that a certain portion of the population seems to believe green means left-inclined politics.  Just by reading the responses to some of my entries you can see that people can get very upset with the whole idea.  Besides the name calling I also see that people are scared.  Maybe it is a combination of shame and remorse.  Who knows.  My approach has always been saving money is the real reward for going green.  Everything else, and there is so much else, is a bonus.  Thank you again.

Brenda - Sorry about the delay in response.  You hit it on the button, not only is it easy...it saves money.  This needs to be an integral message in Realty.

Thank you for the comment.
