Last Sunday, in the middle of Labor Day weekend, I received a call around dinnertime on my business line. It is a holiday weekend and from time to time someone will want to set up a showing directly when the office is closed.
The message was from Aaron Eagle a reporter from a Hawaiian newspaper, Kauai World. He was working on an article about Labor Day and had read a post on Sally Cheeseman's blog. He noticed that I had left a comment regarding how customs are different in Hawaii from other parts of the US. He wanted to know how Minnesotan's celebrate Labor Day. The article, by Aaron Eagle, "A Hard Fought Day Off" was published on Labor Day, September 3, 2007.
Sadly, the Labor Day weekend is the end of summer and back to school. Minnesota is an agricultural state and the Minnesota State Fair, one of the biggest events of the summer, ends its 12 day run on Labor Day. Summer fun at the family cabins or vacations at resorts wind up on Labor day as all school aged kids need to be on the bus stop bright and early the next day. The University of Minnesota and all of its affiliated colleges and universities begin their first classes as well. Labor Day is the official end of summer.
Sally noted that in Hawaii, there are other celebrations and remembrances that are specifically celebrated in the island state. She outlined these some unique festivities in her post, Labor Day in Hawaii: Ethnicities and Festivities! These traditions are not widely known in other parts of the US. I have been educated reading Sally's blog with all of her wonderful localism posts. By commenting on Sally's Hawaiian blog, I, a Minnesota Realtor, was quoted in an article for another Hawaiian publication.
Go figure! You never know where your Active Rain blog will lead you!
What a great story Teri! Just goes to show you that there are real people out there reading these posts.
