Montpelier Homes in the Winter

It's a known fact that some houses are kept vacant during the winter.  Sometimes people have second homes elsewhere, sometimes they've bought their next home and already moved, sometimes people are just on vacation.

Remember that it doesn't  take long for a freeze up to happen.  And if it does, it can be very expensive.

Here are a couple of tips for preventing a freeze up in a vacant home in Montpelier or anywhere:

•1.        Double check with your fuel provider that you're on automatic delivery, or schedule a delivery before you leave.

•2.       Get a "night watchman".  We use a small red light connected to a thermostat.  If the temperature in the house drops below a certain point, it lights up.

•3.       Let a neighbor know what it means if the red light comes on.  They can call you, call your realtor, whoever.

Last year I had a heck of a freeze up in a home I had for sale.  The Barre water department figured that over 60,000 gallons of water went through the house while the pipes were cracked.  60,000 gallons!  The oil company claimed there wasn't an automatic delivery set up...

Be smart.  Remember Ray.

Ray.....vacant homes should be winterized for the winter....all water shut off and pipes drained....when I did alot of relocation listings, the relo company had a list for me to do and one item was to get the home winterized asap.....have you ever seen a frozen home....there's ice on the walls...the entire home would have to be gutted....it's a terrible sight.
