Facebook Reality Check: I'm Not Playing, I'm Working!

Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

Me and Diane last xmas! Many of you know of my wife Diane.  She doesn't blog, but I write about her from time to time.  I swear she is her grandmother reincarnated.  She loves to garden, owns four dogs, never met a stranger, gets up every day to feed the dogs, do her exercise routine on the Wii and have her devotions.  Yeah, she's alright!

Diane works at a bank.  And one of the rules at the bank is that the employees cannot be on Facebook through the day.  Quite frankly, I'm surprised they even have access to the Internet.  But knowing the folks who own and run the bank, I'm sure there is a very good reason why they do...otherwise they wouldn't.

Recently, someone commented to me that it must be nice to be able to "play" on Facebook all day.  Hmmm, play on Facebook all day.  Hmmmm.  That got me to thinking about why someone would think that Real Estate folks "play" on Facebook.  Obviously, there is a lack of understanding here!

So, let me set the record straight...

1. Facebook is a place to connect with people.  According to Facebook statistics, 50% of the more than 500 million users log onto Facebook daily.  And the average user has about 130 friends and is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events.  Why do I spend lots of time on Facebook each day?  Because that's where lots and lots and lots of people are.  And when you are self-employed, you have to find ways to connect with people.  Facebook is ONE of MANY ways I do that.

Click here to see the Facebook Statistics Page.

2. And I'm not playing while I'm on Facebook either.  I'm advertising houses for sale.  And I'm sharing my blogs.  I'm setting up community pages.  And I'm intereacting with people too.  When you sell stuff, you have to stay in front of people as much as possible.  That's why I go to lunch with people and drop by the bank from time to time and meet and great other new small business owners.  Establishing relationships is the foundation of building a business.  But it is more than that too.  Establishing relationships is also what life is about.  Even if nobody never buys a house from me or lets me list their house, increasing your sphere of inlfluence and circle of friendships is a natural part of life.  Remember, we were made to connect to others.  Relationships are how we connect to others.  This is why you will never ever see me playing Facebook games.  That is playing on Facebook and I don't have time or interest in that.

How about some practical application from Diane the banker?...

Diane is one of those people in life who never meets a stranger.  I've mentioned this before, but she's got this amazing ability to make even the toughest biker - gang member - Mr. Tattoo guy smile and turn into a non-threatening "softie" around her.  She's got people flocking to the bank to open their new accounts with her.  And part of the reason is because she is genuine.  She really does care about people.  And they respond to her because they know she isn't just being nice to them in order to get them to come to the bank.  She is being nice to them because she has learned how to live life without judging others.

This is something she is constantly teaching  me.  It is hard, but I am learning that it is the true secret to happiness.  When I make a friendship or build up someone or make someone smile (who I normally would not care to talk to) it makes me smile.  And it helps me keep grumpy Bob in the closet.

And that is part of the reason I spend time on Facebook during the daytime.  It is a community where, alongside business opportunities, I also find opportunity to engage others, maybe make folks smile and practice that golden rule thing Diane reminds me about all the time!

Bob, You are a lucky man to have a wonderful wife Diane. Wish you and her a very healthy, wealthy and prosperous life.

As mentioned by others over permoting yourself on face book may have determintal effects. Be careful of that issue. Otherwise its a great media.

Dear Bob,

Facebook always seemed a bit of a waste of time to me, but you and all others here have opened my eyes to the possibilities. Gotta check it out again.

Very good points Bob! I need to spend more time on FB. This is one are that I've neglected due to lack of time, but I know it's beneficial. BTW- Can you talk to my husband and teach him not to be a "grumpy Rick"? : )  No- he's actually a very friendly person. He just forgets to reach out and connect with people on a regular basis. Thanks for the post and reminding me to get my Facebook on ; )

Great points Bob!  I am on Facebook as well to network, but "play on Facebook all day", I'm sure isn't something most of us Realtors have time to do.  Diane sounds like a wonderful person! You are lucky to have a person with an outlook like hers in your life!!!

Oh my - Facebook. I need to find someone who knows how to use the darned thing and have them sit beside me and show me where to go and what to do. Unfortunately, the people I know who could come and sit beside me know even less about it than I do.

Guess I'll keep stumbling around and perhaps one of these years, I'll "get it." For now, it's just a place where I can get lost more than anything else.

It is great that those of you who use Facebook find value in it. I really don't have the time to spend on it as a one person brokerage with over 50 listings. Thankfully the majority of my listings are land or I could not handle that many properties without some help. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my emails. I have to prioritize how I use my time and actively working with buyers and sellers comes first. I also have some concerns about security with Facebook.

Great post.  For Realtors, Facebook is a tool--just like a cell phone--a laptop--a car.  You certainly can chat on your phone--surf the Internet on your laptop, take pleasure rides in you car, however for most Realtor's these are tools of the trade.  Those who think Realtors are playing on Facebook are probablybly the same who say "I would love to sell real estate--I love to look at houses andI really enjoy watching HGTV".  Some people just don't get it.  However, I am guilty myself.  When I was younger, and hadn't traveled much, I used to think that flight attendants had easy and fun jobs where they traveled all the time, visited exotic places and met exciting people. Now that I know people who have done that job, and it so not the case.

FB has been a valuable tool for me also, depsite the fact that I sometimes feel guilty for being over there.  It is a great place in which to engage others.

Bob, thanks for the post!  I have had people come up behind me @ the office and turn up their nose when they see the FB page.  They are so behind they don't realize how much FB can WORK for you!

Your wife sounds wonderful!  So few people are like that!

Bob, I have to really watch myself on FB...I have so much fun!  I do pop in and out during the day to see what's going on but I don't "hang" on there all day.  Who has time anyway.  It is a great place to market our properties, as you said!

I also think facebook is good for people to make friends and do business that are shy or don't normally get out of the office or home as much as they should
