I have the most adorable Maltese.  He is about 7 yrs old now and is SOOO hyper!  I thought he would have grown out of this stage by now as he grows older but he hasn't.  He barks at everything-a bit annoying, and he jumps up and around and when I get home if I don't acknowledge him right away he starts to whine and runs around in circles!  I know I am probably not helping the situation because I laugh and thinks it cute-and yes annoying.  But its really funny.  I would like to any tips on how to make him calm down.  Any suggestions?

Penny, why does your dog lick his feet?  I can tell by the discoloration he must be doing a lot of foot licking.  According to the Dog Whisperer, when you enter the home totally ignore the dog and go about your business.  When he finally calms down you can then greet him and give him affection.  He needs to learn you are the pack leader and will give him time but on your terms not his.  As long as you continue to give him attention when he is running in circles, you will continue to reinforce that behavior.

I have no idea why he licks his feet but he does it all the time, ok my husband just yelled at me for putting that picture on, he says he is a lot cuter than that so I am looking for a better picture.

Simon-my dog, doesn't even like his feet touched.

I missed the picture, but will check back and hope to see him.  My friend has a Maltese, and she is not hyper.  When she first sees me, she runs up to me and puts her feet on my legs and wags her tails.  She wants petted and picked up.  I think he is getting your attention, as animals are like children, they will sometimes try to get your attention with good behavior as well as bad.  These animals are smarter then we give them credit for!

He is getting his hair cut on Saturday so I will post a new picture then.

I am gone most of the day and I know that all of my dogs miss me and they always want attention right when I get home.  I agree that they are like children, just wanting some love and affection.

Penny, the foot licking could be boredom, or it could be grass allergy.  At any rate that amount of discoloration means he's doing it alot.  Try spraying the inside pads of his feet with an athletes foot spray, and give him a benadryl, probably childrens because of his size.  He may have  a fungus, generated by keeping his feet wet by the licking.  I once had a foot licker and that was the problem.  You do have to keep up with the treatment though as it will recur.
